You can take LIRR trains to New York City, either from LIRR Stony Brook or Ronkonkoma, where frequent direct train to Grand Central is available. Drive to Stony Brook Station in 7-8 minutes (3.6 miles) or Ronkonkoma Station in 15+ minutes (10.6 miles). Thus, day trips to Manhattan are easily doable.
