The only thing one might criticise about this lovely cottage in the gorgeous city of Carmel-by-the-sea is that it is actually so charming and its surroundings so overwhelmingly beautiful that one might end up indulging in this environment and forgetting about academic work. Luckily the desk (perfect height, well-lit at night) also offers a nice view of the garden, and I found it a good idea to change between working here and taking a book down to the beach or outside on the deck (or going for a walk whenever my thoughts reached a dead end, to watch pelicans, seals, sea otters and dolphins!). The cottage is perfectly located in a quiet street just a few steps from the beach, with a grocery store and bus stop nearby - I didn't bring a car and had no problems at all to supply myself.
Everything is very tidy and well-kept: The love and affectionate care that its owners are investing into this family home can be perceived in every corner and inch of it. Clay and his wife have been extremely kind, helpful and patient in answering all my questions, helping me to organise my stay here and making it a wonder- and fruitful experience far beyond what I had ever expected of my writing retreat. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.
