Airy Historic 1922 Schoolhouse in Central Pasadena - Weekend rentals of whole house OR furnished guest room, pvt bath, + studio available for share, perfect for Huntington scholar or couple.
Airy, large, loft-like fully furnished home with large fenced yard and huge oak trees. Very convenient in north central Pasadena, with shaded streets, good houses, quiet neighbors. Two large bedrooms with bath and two offices with big windows; the studio office has glass on all three sides overlooking the garden. Available for 2 - 4 nights; longer stays negotiable. Scholars wishing a private room with private bath and office/studio for longer stays (i.e., quiet owner stays on premises), 1 - 2 adults, are welcome to enquire.
The house is unusual in that although it is in the middle of the residential Orange Heights Historic District known for its handsome Craftsman bungalows, the home began as a schoolhouse, built as the "world's first college of orthodontia" by USC dentist Dr. Edward Angle, who lived next door. Hence, the many large windows; spacious and airy rooms; and the 20’ x 30’ living room, once the original lecture theatre. The school was built in 1922 by Peter Hall, who with his brother John served as the builders for the Arts and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene, designers of the famous 1908 Gamble House located five minutes away. Dr. Angle’s widow converted the building to residential use in the 1940s.
House renovated for sustainability and safety: great cross ventilation, roof super-insulated, roof ridge vents, ceiling fans in bedrooms, motion detector lights. We do not have AC, and don’t need it except for a very few days in late summer (typically.) Unusual features include 10’ ceilings and lots of built-in cabinetry.
Upgraded elite wireless dsl. Garage suits one car and free off-street parking space for another. New 32" Sony TV plus Blue-Ray for Netflix, Hulu+ (please advise if you'd like us to start the service, no charge to you.) No commercial cable service. Co-ax cable in each bedroom. Original Batchelder tile fireplace with damper, commercial-quality DCS gas stove with 15,000 Btus, Bosch dishwasher, microwave, zinc countertops, skylights, baby grand piano, lots of storage. Floors are grey-green slate, oak, polished concrete or linoleum. New queen mattresses in each bedroom. 20’ x 30’ basement houses washer, dryer, wood shop. Fences and two gates are 6’ (1.8m) tall except for very rear, where it is 3’ fronted by tall shrubbery. Rear gate, to trash and the narrow street behind (which also serves garage entrance), is kept padlocked when not in use. Weber b-b-que, large outdoor patio with handsome new heavy-timber pergola (spring 2012) sheltering large table for outdoor dining under the trees.
Close to the Huntington Library/Caltech (3.9k/2.4 miles), even nearer to Central and Old Town Pasadena; the San Gabriel mountains and lower Arroyo for hiking etc. are minutes away. Downtown Los Angeles is 20-25 car minutes. 20 minute fast walk to the closest Metro stop. Shopping at great ethnic markets (Armenian, Indian, Hispanic) nearby, as are good retail shopping, restaurants in all flavors and price points, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. The well-known progressive All Saints Church is 5 car minutes, many other faiths including Buddhist near by.
NO SMOKING anywhere on property. Dogs and children OK with additional deposit; security deposit $500 for getaway weekends of two or three nights.
$600 per short two-night, three-day weekend for four people, $425 for two, with the exception of holiday weekends. Longer stays available. A $150 cleaning fee is required. We have an excellent gardener and housekeeper, both long-term and trusted.
