Thinking about a break this spring...Come enjoy the wildflowers orchids and wild asparagus...and the silence, woods and sweeping views of the foothills of the Cevennes! The house, La Hourne, sits on top a rolling hill and has sweeping views of the foothills and Cevennes mountains. It is site of peace and tranquility –you can’t see another house from the terrace, only rolling hills and the twin peak mountains in the near distance. On most days the only sounds are the distant sheep bells – and in the summer – the cicadas. Built in the mid 17th century, the house is spacious and full of charm. It has wifi and bose speakers for ipad/ipod, two double bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, wood burning stoves in both the kitchen and living room, and one bathroom with a cast iron bathtub and separate shower. There is a writing desk, book shelves and printer available. The living room is a beautiful, sunny, and large and airy room - doubles up perfectly as workspace. The house is 50 minutes from Montpellier and 45 minutes from Nimes. It's about 90 minutes to Aix en Provence. There are open-air markets and restaurants in many near-by villages, most of which are ten minutes away. The house offers the perfect blend of quiet isolation and nearby activity, restaurants and great cultural sites. It's a perfect location for someone wanting to combine a writing project and some easy exploration of the south of France. You will need a car. It's also appropriate for someone on sabbatical at any of the universities in Montpellier. The drive to Montpellier is beautiful and easy. Most of the campuses are easy to access from the main road into the city. The house is close to good local French schools. I found the area when I was in search of a quiet, accessible and affordable place to finish writing my thesis. I fell in the love the region, bought La Hourne, restored the vineyard and house. I'm spending more time in the US over the next few years, and thus am happy to open it up for others who are looking for an inspiring place to take a break and/or write.
