As a longtime resident of Berlin in 80's I was thrilled to find a place so near Kreuzberg, my old haunt; in addition, it exceeded our expectations! My husband and 2 teenaged children and I lived here for 2 months in Summer 2010 during a DAAD and a ZMO grant, respectively, and are still raving about the number of bakeries, cafes & bars (Szimpla beneath our main balcony became a standard!), restaurants, bookstores either across the street or only a block or so away. The ease of travel on tram, bus, subway and commuter train was a big plus! We loved the Boxhagener Platz a stone's throw away with its music, swingsets, water feature and picnickers. Very hip neighborhood of young families, punks, tatoo-wearers, non-ethnic Germans, retirees. We bought most of our groceries at the marvelous organic market 2x weekly but got cheap staples at the ALDA and Rewe groceries only a few blocks further away. We also bought plenty of souvenirs and presents for the folks back home at the fantastic flea market on Sundays. Landlady and her husband pleasant and helpful; they live nearby. I received all my book orders in their mailbox downstairs and had mail sent there too--no problem. There is lots of space and brightness to the apt, gorgeous blooming Linden trees outside one window. Everything you need in the apartment in a very quiet building. Immaculate condition and plenty of extra towels and bedding so you aren't doing laundry all the time. My kids are already clamoring to come back and get 'our' Friedrichshain apartment again! The loft bed was a lovely haven above the writing desk near the smaller balcony and the non-smoking policy meant the apartment was fresh and inviting from Day One.

We stayed in Monika Schulze's apartment in Berlin-Friedrichshain for 12 weeks in late 2008 while my husband did a residency/research at the Universitat der Kunst across town. It was excellent. The apartment is lovely, well appointed with all that you need, and in a great location. The fresh food market on Saturdays and the flea market on Sundays as well as the trendy Friedrichshain shops, bars, restaurants and parks are a huge bonus. Our 3 children (twins aged 6 and 8yr old) went to the local school, Zille Grundschule, who were very supportive given our kids spoke no German. You can get around very easily to all of Berlin, museums and sights from here via public transport or bikes etc. Monika was very helpful and a great host. I highly recommend it for anyone coming to Berlin for short or long stays. We were also able to have my parents stay, as it is very spacious, during that time. In short, we loved it and it made our stay in Berlin memorable and a huge success. Thank you Monika!
