A short walk to world famous vineyards such as "Stoneyridge", a golf course, a forest reserve (with walking tracks for nature lovers) there is always plenty to do here in a vibrant community. For the children there are two Primary Schools and one High School about ten minutes away by school bus. There is a semi self-contained studio apartment downstairs with laptop desk and internet connection, bed, table, fridge, microwave, tea making facilities, and a bathroom. The studio is ideal for quiet research as it has broadband access and phone or as a separate private area for your visitors. From the studio, three sets of French doors open onto an extensive deck with glorious views extending all the way to Little Barrier Island.

The bus stop and children's playground are at the corner of the street.

We have just returned to our Canadian winter after a blissful 3 weeks of New Zealand summer on Waiheke Island. Gayleen and Don's house in Onetangi is well described on this site and the pictures show exactly what the property has to offer. The location is spectacular - gorgeous long beach, natural bush walks, peaceful, a couple of good local eateries, and a near-by convenience store for basic supplies. On a clear night, the stars are breath-taking. The house is stocked with whatever you'll need. The kitchen is very well set up. There is a new washing machine, and all necessary cleaning equitment. The beds are comfortable - even by our exacting standards! Gayleen is kind enough to supply linen for those coming from overseas. She was also very helpful in making sure everything was in good working order for our stay - including the wireless internet. She is good-humoured, generous and thoughtful - and all our dealings with her were very positive. One of us had a visiting appointment at the University of Auckland during our stay, and the commute was straightforward. It involves a half hour on the bus from Onetangi to the ferry and a half hour ferry ride to the mainland. From there it is about a 20 minute walk to the campus. It's a little pricey - $38 for a round trip - but that just means we planned our visits carefully and did as much as we could pack in when we made a mainland trip. I recommend this property to you without reservation. The only problem is that the island is so relaxing and beautiful, it takes quite a lot of will power to turn away from the spectacular views and leave the comfortable seat on the verandah to write that article!

NOTE from LISTER: Long stay Academics (more than one month) purchase a 40 trip concession card or a Captain's Club monthly commuter pass -trips cost $11.85 each way not the $19 for the one off trip on the city ferry or $35 return. Even cheaper is the concession to the University's Tamaki Campus on the eastern Sealink ferry-$10.66 on concession

We spent a 5 month sabbatical at Gayleen and Don's home on Waiheke Island. It was a wonderful experience! Gayleen and Don were exceptional hosts--from arranging our pick up at the airport, serving us our first kiwi breakfast at their home, and helping us on our way. They were always prompt with getting back to us if we had questions about the home or if something wasn't working. The home was fully-stocked with basic amenities---we only brought our suitcases of clothing. The house is located near one of the nicest beaches on Waiheke--we miss falling asleep to the soothing sound of ocean waves! And what sunsets and views from the balcony! It's a beautiful home that Don and Gayleen built themselves. There is a garden with fresh herbs and several lemon trees on the property. It has two levels, and the top level deck has gorgeous panoramic views of the lush hills and the ocean. It is even better than it looks in the pictures. The bus stop is less than a 10 minute walk away. And commuting to Auckland University each day via ferry was a lovely experience (averaging 1.5 hours each way, door-to-door). Our daughter was 6-12 months old during our stay--and the home is quite nice for a family with a young baby. In general, the island is a great place for babies--lots of families and kid activities. We spent a wonderful three months on Waiheke island, living in the perfect place. Don and Gayleen's house in Onetangi is a perfect spot for a sabbatical retreat. The house can accomodate up to six people. It has a wonderful view of the beach from the large balcony. There are all the comforts of home provided. Besides all this, Onetangi is a great place to live. Accessed by buses which meet the ferry, the beach on Onetangi has got to be the best beach on Waiheke, and Waiheke has many great beaches and fabulous coastal walks. It has a great restaurant within walking distance and many world famous vineyards and restaurants are a bus ride away. The golf course is a 5 minute bus journey and they will provide you with clubs and access at an incredible price! I have never lived in a place more beautiful and peaceful. Waiheke island has a real sense of community, apart from the weekly market in Ostend, there's always a festival or a performance going on. Check out the local cinema in Oneroa! The fast ferry to Auckland means the city and the rest of New Zealand is right there when you need it. No wonder everyone in New Zealand wants to live here. Thank you Gayleen and Don for the opportunity to live in such a beautiful home. We will be back. Excellent Margaret Munro 6/18/2012 9:41:00 AM
Our long-awaited visit to New Zealand was made perfect by our stay at Pacific View on Waiheke. (We are an older couple from Canada.) The million-dollar views, comfortable house, lovely gardens and relaxed ambience were wonderful. Gayleen and Don, our hosts, went out of their way to welcome us with tea, scones and cream, and had organized a shuttle to take us to the ferry. Access to downtown Auckland and the University was quite efficient (going as a foot passenger and taking public transit works very well), and we loved exploring Waiheke itself, which has a surprising variety of scenery and activities. There are great swimming beaches, wineries and vineyards, grocery stores and artists' studios within a short drive. Friends who came to visit were very envious of the extended time we spent there (a month); guests were able to stay comfortably in a separate level of the house with its own bathroom (a rarity in NZ, we found). All in all, a lovely house in one of the best places in the world to combine academic work and re-creation. Excellent Angela Ward 5/30/2012 2:05:00 PM
We rented the Mackereths' home on Waiheke for 4 months while we were in New Zealand on sabbatical, and it was wonderful! It has a beautiful view of Hauraki Gulf and was only a 5-minute walk to the Onetangi Beach (one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen). The Mackereths were warm and thoughtful hosts, who helped to arrange transportation on our arrival and gave us excellent advice on places to go and things to see while we were in New Zealand. As with most New Zealand houses, there is no central heat, but the house is well-built, with windows that seal well (which is often not the case with New Zealand houses, which are famous for being drafty!), so even a winter visit is comfortable. This is a very comfortable house in an incredibly beautiful location, and a great value. Excellent Luisa Deckard 1/18/2010 4:12:00 PM
