Beautiful apartment in historic residence in the heart of Roman Languedoc

NOTE: The apartment is available for short- or long-term rentals starting mid-October 2013.

Located in 'centre ville' of beautiful Narbonne, the ancient capital of Occitania (modern-day Provence, Languedoc, and Aquitaine), this apartment is appreciated by its guests, many of whom return year after year to take advantage of the 'sunny south' while enjoying all modern comforts. Only 20 minutes to the beautiful beaches of Gruissan and Narbonne Plage, and close by a number of mythic Cathar castles, the city of Narbonne itself offers plenty of entertainment year-round. From its Michelin-starred restaurant to its genuine Italian pizzarias, and especially its renowned "Halles" (covered market), open every day of the year, it's a gourmand's paradise!

The apartment could not be more central: two minutes by foot in one direction, and you are at the Cathedral St. Just, next to the Place de l'Hotel de Ville (town square). Two minutes in the other direction, and you'll find yourself at the Canal de la Robine, a tributary of the Canal du Midi, which flows through the heart of the city, bordered on each bank with restaurants and bars à vin. Four minutes in yet another direction takes you to the Place de la Révolution/Léon Blum, with a park and more restaurants.

The apartment is essentially one very large space, with enormous volume (4-metre-high ceilings). Wooden stairs lead to the sleeping loft with its very large bed (180 cm, extra-large king size). The loft has two windows giving onto the street, two bedside tables, a low table, an armchair, and a ceiling fan, as well as a large closet with shelves and plenty of space for hanging clothes.

The very large, impeccably clean bathroom has a window, a radiator, a hair-dryer, and several towel racks, as well as shelves and a brand-new cabinet. And of course there is a sink (quite large), a toilet, a bidet, and a brand-new shower (90 cm2) with two sources of water: handheld and overhead.

The apartment boasts a "good cook's kitchen", with every cooking implement you could want. A shopping cart is at your disposal to help you bring back delicacies from "Les Halles", just a few minutes across the canal by foot, or from Monoprix, just steps away at the Place de l'Hotel de Ville. The newly-installed air-conditioning/ heating unit is a dream: quiet and incredibly efficient.

We were very happy with this apartment. It is a lovely space in an excellent location. The rooms are large, with period features such as the panelling on the walls and decorative plasterwork on the ceiling. The tall front windows overlook the Canal St Martin and provide lots of light. We found it comfortable and very well equipped. The markets, restaurants and small specialty food shops in the neighbourhood are a delight. The owner, Laura, was extremely helpful with all manner of practical suggestions about the apartment itself and the services in the neighbourhood: thanks to her we found a wonderful bakery and some fine places to eat out, shop for other groceries, or get a glass of wine. The gardens along the Canal are lovely, taking you along a short walk to the Bastille (and thus the opera). From there it’s just steps into the Marais and on to other places we wanted to visit. Like her, we also became attached to the #63 bus that takes you through the Left Bank to both well known and little known attractions. (Try the taxidermist, Deyrolle, for instance.: it’s astonishing.) We found that the 12th had its own relatively unknown attractions, like La Promenade Plantée - an elevated parkway on an abandoned railway line - a wonderful oasis with ponds and gardens and views from its higher elevation that provide a very different perspective on nearby buildings and streetscapes. Also nearby in the 12th was Parc de Bercy, with a Frank Gehry designed building (now a cinema museum) and the stunning Simone de Beauvoir pedestrian bridge crossing the Seine to the striking new Bibliotheque Nationale. We really enjoyed being able to walk to so many interesting places – and then come back to a place that was so spacious and comfortable. This apartment is perfect. The 12th is not that well-known but it has everything except the rush of tourists. Great markets, great restaurants, easy to walk to the Marais and/or the Left Bank Latin Quarter. The tall front windows facing the Canal St. Martin allow light to come steaming in while the back windows onto a courtyard brings in early morning sun and a cool breeze. The rooms are spacious and well furnished and there is everything in the kitchen any good cook would appreciate. The TV has scores of stations and lots of movies that can be heard in English with French sub-titles. The best part is Laura, who owns the apartment with her husband John. France is not America and mechanical operations are not high on the list of French concerns but there is no need to worry. If anything goes awray a quick phone call to Laura and she gets it taken care of. There is no way to emphasize how important that is. This is our second turn here and we are already committed for next year. Eugene Shapiro Excellent Eugene Shapiro 3/3/2011 4:45:00 AM
We were very fortunate indeed to find such an ideal apartment for our needs in Paris. We have been living in the apartment for the last eight months and have two more months remaining. It is a large two-bedroom apartment with everything one needs. It is very nicely furnished and the beds are quite comfortable. The rooms are large with lots of light. We have a lovely view of Canal St. Martin just before it joins the Seine from the large front windows and a very nice garden view from the rear windows. The metro and two train stations (Austerlitz and Lyon) are very close and we have found that we can walk almost anywhere. We take classes at the Sorbonne and walk there, through the Jardin des Plantes, in twenty minutes. The apartment is on the premier etage for very easy in and out access. There are wonderful markets very close by. By coincidence, and only after finding the apartment on the web, did we discover that the owners live in our neighborhood. They could not have been more helpful in every respect. We have now seen several apartments in Paris as a result of friendships we have developed and there is not one that we would choose over this one. The price, in our view, was very good considering all that we have here. Our stay in Paris has been exceptional in every respect and this apartment has been a major reason for that.
