Townhouse Near Harlem/Columbia University
We love our house and the fact that we were responsible for restoring it and also live upstairs should both be important endorsements about the quality of the building and specifically, this newly renovated apartment. We hope the photos and the written description will assist you in your decision; however, there are additional advantages to which we like to call your attention. The apartment offers Wifi service at no additional cost. For late night departures, luggage can be stored from check-out until you need to head to the airport (no tip required or expected). Depending on the cleaning schedule, late check-out may be arranged with no additional cost. There is a rear yard for those who wish an outdoor sitting space. A laundry is available. Finally, and we like to think most importantly, much of the art in the apartment is original fine art from Africa. If there is interest in seeing more of it, we can arrange for a visit to Contemporary African Art Gallery without having to leave the building.
The house was built to take advantage of views of and proximity to one of Manhattans largest parks, Riverside Park, and the Hudson River. You are steps away from a beautiful park designed to be a foreground for viewing the Hudson River.
The multi-cultural neighborhood that surrounds us contains elements that cater to the University community and those of us who are here longer than four years. Within a few blocks of the house there are restaurants representing nine nationalities; from French to Indian to Thai to Ethiopian to Japanese to Mexican. Speaking to your palate in a less refined way, but important non-the-less, there are two gourmet, specialty food shops within two blocks of the house and the best New York bagels in the city at the end of the street. Further, there are four venues for live jazz and there are often cultural programs at Colombia University open to the public. We are happy to make recommendations.
There are also secret neighborhood gems like the museum directly behind us dedicated to the work of Russian painter and visionary, Nicholas Roerich or the house that was Duke Ellington's home just two blocks away.
However, we must be fair to the rest of New York. Two blocks from the house the #1 subway takes you uptown to Harlem or downtown to most points south: Time Square, Greenwich Village, Soho and beyond. The #4 bus, next to that subway, goes east to Fifth Avenue and to any point on Museum Mile and the Fifth Avenue shopping to the south.
