Spacious and beautiful home near downtown, universities, park and river
We have a beautiful 4-bedroom red-brick house with a large landscaped yard surrounded by 8 to 10 foot cedar hedges. A stone patio links to the kitchen and BBQ, and is a beautiful spot for quiet outdoor dining during the summer. The backyard also has a swing set and a small garden shed. Our kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances and has a breakfast nook where we enjoy the morning sun. The main floor also has a large dining / living room and a family room with a high quality 46 inch flat TV, DVD player and Wii. The upper floor has a master bedroom with a queen-size bed and an in-suite bathroom. Two of the three other bedrooms have a double bed and the third has a twin bed. The largest of these three bedrooms also doubles up as an office. There is a second bathroom on the upper floor and a powder room on the main floor. The family room on the main floor can also sleep two on a hide-a-bed. The basement has a large playroom equipped with a ping pong table, and a laundry room.
Our house is located in a quiet neighbourhood nested between the Ottawa River and Gatineau Park. Walking, skiing and snowshoeing paths start across the street, where there is also ice skating during the winter months. Biking (road and off-road) and hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the hundreds of kilometers of trails in Gatineau Park, which is also known for its lakes, beaches and camping spots.
For urban outings, the house is a ten-minute (6 km) drive to the National Art Gallery, the National Arts Center, Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, and many other attractions. The lively ByWard Market is a great place for food and music, and has a great outdoor market (open daily). The city of Ottawa hosts a winter festival (Winterlude) in February, the Tulip Festival in May, and Canada Day festivities on July 1st, as well as music festivals during the summer months. For sports enthusiasts, Ottawa and Gatineau have one of the best bike path systems in Canada, and whether you like to bike, run or walk, the path that passes near our home can take you straight to downtown Ottawa or out to greener pastures, or even the hills of Gatineau Park.
We live 7 kms from the University of Ottawa, 13 kms from Carleton University and 1.5 kms from the Université du Québec en Outaouais.
We are a family of four. I am a professor at the University of Ottawa and my wife is a civil servant. We have two sons aged 13 and 8. We will be away for a 6 month sabbatical leave.
