Myself and another Sciences Po student (both girls) rented this apartment for four months from August to December of 2012. In the rental contract there was a clause stating “the security deposit could be used by us [the landlord] to pay damages, if any, to the property, furniture and/or appliances, cleaning of the apartment”. When we rented the apartment, it had clearly not been professionally cleaned. When we left, we left it in a spotless state that was plainly equal to, if not better than, the state in which we received it. However, 19 days after we had moved out, and left the continent, we were charged with a €695.25 cleaning fee. This exorbitant price was not in the wording of the contract, nor discussed with us when we moved in or out. This fee was in addition to €158.02 spent on replaced/damaged items. This included a €3.50 vacuum-cleaner bag and €1.59 lighter for the kitchen stove, which was broken when we moved in. For us, these petty bills on top of a huge cleaning fee demonstrated the owner's intent to essentially steal two thirds of our security deposit. We informed the owner that we would contact associations within Paris that defend the rights of renters (La Confédération Nationale de Logement (C.N.L) and L’Association des Comités de Défense des Locataires (A.C.D.L)). In response, the owner wrote that he would ask his attorney to interfere “to stop [y]our blackmail and accusations without proofs”. Through a lengthy negotiation process, legal action was avoided and the cleaning fee was reduced to €200 - however we are, frankly, doubtful that any cleaning did take place. We believe the owner attempted to defraud us of a significant proportion of our security deposit. Had we not defended our rights, he would have succeeded. We both feel victimized and urge potential renters to be extremely cautious. We cannot recommend renting any apartment from this owner unless you are well aware of your rights and proficient enough in French to navigate the French legal and bureaucratic system. We highly recommend you look elsewhere. Disappointing Zoé Anderson 2/3/2013 4:04:00 PM
