Luminous renovated walnut barn (sleeps 2 - 4), Perigord Noir (Dordogne) near Sarlat
The walnut drying barn (Sechoir) is one of three self-contained buildings on the property. The property has a tranquil, sunny enclosed garden and swimming pool with deck. Individual buildings are cosy enough for one or two, but can accommodate up to 12 - 15 in three buildings (see http://esparoutis.com for full details, up-to-date availability and combined rental rates). It is located in a tiny rural hamlet (7 properties) a short walk from the village of St Cybranet.
The Sechoir is 85 sq.m. on 2 floors plus a huge upstairs balcony accessed by three French doors, two bedrooms (1 double, 1 twin), bathroom, WC, open-plan living room with well-equipped kitchen (dishwasher, microwave oven, espresso coffeemaker, toaster etc.) and dining/study corner, large partly-enclosed patio downstairs through French doors from living room. Suits an individual or couple with child but can comfortably accommodate up to 4.
The Sechoir is an inviting light-filled space combining the stone wall, oak and poplar beams of the original drying shed, poplar boards on interior walls, with patio doors onto a generous first floor balcony and ground floor courtyard, and lots of glass. It overlooks both the garden and the valley with views up to the cliffs.
Wireless ADSL, desk & office chair. Printer/scanner/copier and widescreen LCD on request. Garden furniture, BBQ, washer/drier in adjacent shared laundry. Bicycles on request. Heat pump for heating in the colder months.
There are herbs, chillies and some strawberries in the garden, a plum tree and a fig tree in the field (plums in July, figs in autumn, if the birds don't get them first), chestnuts in the woods (autumn, particularly north of the Dordogne river), and walnuts at any time of year (they keep for a couple of years) from our own walnut trees! Help with the harvest if you are here in October/November!
Esparoutis is a tiny hamlet of traditional stone houses - 7 properties, mostly built in the 18th century - nestling in the Ceou Valley (one of the least polluted streams in the area). It's up a lane from a minor road and easily accessible, a short walk or flat bike ride to shops (St Cybranet 1km or Castelnaud 2.5km) and 4km (not flat!) from the busy village of Cenac (wide range of services).
This section of the Dordogne River (2.5 km away) is called the Vallee des Cinq Chateaux and is probably the most beautiful part, with the postcard-perfect villages of Domme (8km), Beynac and La Roque Gageac (6km) and the castles of Castelnaud, Fayrac, Les Milandes, Lacoste and the gardens of Marqueyssac and L'Albarede all within 5km. Sarlat is 15 minutes away, and many major sites - Les Eyzies, Vezere Valley, cave paintings, and many more chateaux - are within half an hour.
