Location: St Laurent de Cerdans is a typical small french village located in the foothills of the Pyrenees and has magnifcent views of the Canigou (mountain) and surrounding countryside.
This historic Catalan village is situated on an open plateau in the mountains close to the border of Spain/Catalunya - just about as far south in France as you can get!
The Mediterranean beaches of France and the Costa Brava are within easy reach. Close by is the art-culture of Ceret (Picasso) and Figueres (Dali) in Spain.
This area is home to the fine Roussillon and Muscat wines which enthusiasts can sample direct from the 'cave' where they are produced. The village is unique in that it is within easy reach of the coast, sandy beaches or rocky coves; mountain activities are on the doorstep for the more energetic; you can shop and people watch at the French street cafes of Ceret and Perpignan; enjoy the vibrancy of the Spanish, and sample Catalan cuisine in Figueres, Girona and Barcelona; or just enjoy the tranquillity of the Pyrenees enjoying gentle walks in the surrounding landscape. It is an easy drive to the lovely white sandy beaches of Argeles sur Mer and St Cyprien and the beautiful historic fishing village of Collioure with its fabulous seafood restaurants. Just drive 10 minutes south from St Laurent de Cerdans and you will find yourself in Spain - the beach at Roses is an easy day trip as is the large warm freshwater lake at Darnius. Barcelona is only 2 hours drive!
It is a calm and tranquil spot, however 3 restaurants and 2 bars are within an easy stroll from the house. The village has everything you might need - a small supermarket, boulangerie, charcuterie, takeaway pizza, outdoor heated swimming pool with mountain views (open in summer), museum and cinema.
St Laurent has many festivals throughout the year. La Sardane - the Catalan dance of freedom depicted by Picasso - is danced in the square below the Tower, the best view in the village. |
