My partner and I (professor and therapist respectively) are leaving Berlin for the Spring semester and are renting our airy, rustic, duplex rooftop apartment. The apartment is in the Seitenflügel ("side building") on the 4th (and fifth) floor of a renovated Altbau right on Weserstrasse – one of Berlin's trendiest areas, with restaurants, bars, vintage stores, bookstores, and shops in a vibrant, multicultural area. The location is truly ideal, with immediate access to all the excitement the area has to offer, as well as nearby public transport: the U7 and U8 at Hermannplatz are about an 8 minute walk away, and the M41 bus (amongst others) at Sonnenalle is around the corner. These provide direct (or otherwise quick) connections to the the Humboldt University and Staatsbibliothek (both at Potsdamer Platz and Unter den Linden), which can also easily be reached by bike. And while the flat is located in the center of the Kreuzberg/Neukölln/Kreuzkölln action, because it is high up in the Seitenflügel, it is very much an oasis of calm and quiet, and is bright because it is not obstructed by the Vorderhaus. The canal and two parks are within easy walking distance. The apartment is beautifully set up with unique amenities not usually found in many apartments in Berlin, including a sauna, airconditioning (i.e. cooling and heating), a large balcony/terrace, and even further up, rooftop access. In terms of layout, the apartment is a one bedroom and is open concept: the bottom floor has a large walk-in closet as you enter (with washer on site), large kitchen/sitting area, modest bedroom, and bathroom; the upper floor is a large open workspace and living room, with a fireplace, big balcony/terrace, and rooftop access. The living and workspace can be divided by a curtain and include a guest couch-bed. The workspace has one small and one large desk; the latter's height can be electronically adjusted for sitting or standing. The kitchen is fully stocked for cooking. Dates for renting are reasonably flexible. Ideally we'd like someone to take over for the entire period we're gone (Jan 1 - around May 15), but we're also open to longer stays within that period. We can show the apartment in person or virtually until December 29; after that we'll have to organize for a friend to show the apartment virtually. We're especially interested in renting to someone who is a good fit for the place and who can be counted on to check our mail and water our plants.

Comments: Central location on one the most popular streets in Berlin
Comments: Rental terms are first, last, and security (2000) upfront. Rent includes electricity, heating, internet, gas, and a cleaning service twice a month.
Comments: The apartment is somewhat (but not completely) babyproofed; it's possible – though not ideal for everyone – to live here with one small child (as we have done). No pets, but you can smoke on the balcony.
We'd ask that you check our mail semi-regularly (say, every couple of weeks) and, in the event that something looks important, to open and send pictures.
We'd ask that you water the plants. There are quite a few but this shouldn't be onerous or complicated.

Comments: Ideally we'd like someone to commit to the entire Spring 2024 semester, but we're open to discussion.
