Village house in Mediterranean France

Charming row house in the heart of Aniane, an attractive, medieval country village twenty miles west of Montpellier. The commune of Aniane has a population of about 3,500. No car is necessary to live here, as the village is well supplied with grocery stores, bakeries, shops, cafes and restaurants. The village is at the foot of the Cevennes mountains; the surrounding country is full of historical and cultural interest, with many opportunities for hiking, swimming, kayaking, bicycling, wine-tasting, and restaurant-going. The main local industry is wine production, but olives, fruit and other crops are also produced. Montpellier, about half an hour away, is a fascinating and cosmopolitan city, with outstanding museums, restaurants and public spaces. The Mediterranean, the Rhone Valley, the Pyrenees and other key tourist destinations are within a few hours' drive. Sete, the nearest major beach town, is about 45 minutes away. From Montpellier, Paris is about three and a half hours away by TGV, the ultra-fast train.
The house, like many others in the medieval part of Aniane, has four levels, including a vaulted basement, a main living level opening onto a small garden, and two higher floors with bedrooms, including a garret room at the top of the house. This top room opens onto a terrace with a stunning view of neighboring rooftops and gardens and, beyond the outskirts of Aniane, vineyards, the Herault River, nearby villages, hills to the east and mountains rising at the west. Shops, bakeries, cafes and other amenities are within a few minutes' walk from the front door.
The house is very peaceful, partly because the street on which it is located is too narrow for vehicles; it is well suited for quiet study and has often been used for this purpose. It has been completely renovated since its purchase by the current owner in 1991, with new windows, heating, plumbing and electricity. It is heated by a fuel-oil stove and wall-mounted electric heaters in the bedrooms.
The main living area has a kitchen and dining room looking out on the street, and a living room opening onto the small, walled garden. Above that level, there are two medium-sized bedrooms with double beds, and a small, child's bedroom with bunk beds. There are two bathrooms, one with a shower and the other with both shower and tub.

Rent varies from 750 euros to 1200 euros per month, depending on season. Average monthly rent is generally lower for longer stays.
Metered costs of electricity, gas, and water are visitors' responsibility.
