Well-located family home near parks, Gourmet Ghetto, UC Berkeley

Spend mid-May through mid-July 2021 or early January through early July 2022 in a much beloved, three-bedroom, two-bathroom house, two blocks from Walnut Square and the Gourmet Ghetto, close to Solano Avenue, and a short drive or bike ride to UC Berkeley campus.

Located on the first crest of the Berkeley Hills, the house is nestled in the quiet, safe neighborhood of Live Oak Park, which is composed of owner-occupied single family homes. On a fogless afternoon one can see the San Fransciso skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge from the living room and front deck.

The house has hardwood floors and oriental rugs throughout. As well, the house is furnished with a piano, a computer, a WiFi router (high-speed connection through Comcast), a projector (for watching films off your laptop), and four telephones with free nationwide calling.

The house comfortably sleeps a couple with two children. The "upstairs level" bedrooms have queen-sized Oysterbeds, and the downstairs (main level) bedroom, a brand-new full-size trundlebed. The sliding glass door in the master bedroom gives onto the quiet, east-facing back garden. It and the middle bedroom are equipped with televisions (connected to Comcast cable).

The "house computer" looks out onto the rose & vegetable garden from the breakfast room. It is also the location of the WiFi-enabled color printer/scanner/flat-screen photocopier.

This house is destined for a couple or a family with one or two children. Tenants may invite visits to stay for short periods.

Pets are negotiable, as is the rental of our Mitsubishi Lancer.

Description of the floor plan:

The house was built 90 years ago, and is just under 2000 square feet. There are 26 steps running from the street to the front door (including the landing). The patio is situated at the level of the landing.

The living room runs nearly the width of the house, and leads into both the study and the dining room. The study has two doors -- one leading in from the entryway and the other leading out to the hallway, and it can also serve as a bedroom for one person.

The dining room leads to the hallway and the kitchen. The hallway goes up five stairs, and leads to two bedrooms (both with queen beds), a linen closet, and the original mauve bathroom. The master bedroom has a sliding glass door that gives onto the back garden.

Returning to the dining room, one walks east to enter the large kitchen which leads to the side patio, the breakfast room, and the basement. The basement is the home of the laundry room and the 2nd bathroom. The laundry room contains a washer and a dryer (both new), along with an iron and ironing board and a hanging rack/sorting bin for clothes. A radio is provided for entertainment while ironing. Beyond the laundry room is a bathroom created in May of 2000, which boasts an extremely large, two-person shower. The back door of the bathroom leads to steps going up to the back garden.

Everything about this booking and stay was excellent. Laura's communication and assistance was outstanding and she went above and beyond to make our stay a pleasant one. Instructions were clear and concise and the apartment was clean and as described. It was in a quiet part of town with easy access to everything and lovely local bakeries and restaurants. Our two boys had the best time of their life. Even on the last day when Laura had ordered us a taxi and there ended up being a fun run on our street (so the street was blocked) I was able to call Laura in the US (and wake her up - sorry again Laura) - she was able to rebook the taxi for us. Everything was wonderful with our stay in this two bedroom apartment overlooking the marina. The location is very safe and has easy access to all the tourist sites. Notre Dame and Ile Saint Louis are within walking distance and there are Metro and bus stops very close to the apartment. It was so nice being able to walk out the door and be steps away from the Seine River. You can walk across the bridge over the river and be in the Jardin des Plantes, which has beautiful gardens and a zoo. Restaurants are within walking distance too, as is The Marais, my favorite area of Paris. The host was very helpful in recommending restaurants, off-the-beaten path sites not to miss and the easiest way to get to the sites. The instructions for getting from the airport to the apartment, codes to enter the building and how to operate everything in the apartment were well written and easy to follow. There are double locks on the doors! I felt very safe. The living room and large dining room overlook the marina and the two bedrooms have windows that overlook the garden area. It's a great place to stay, so much better than a hotel!!! There's also an elevator to go up the one floor to the apartment, although the stairs are wide and easy to walk up too. The beds were comfortable and there are desks in each bedroom. There's a nice armoire in the bedroom I stayed in. The kitchen has everything you need and the bathroom is clean and nice. The water pressure was fine. I wouldn't have changed anything or asked for more! The host was always available and assisted me in booking a taxi to the CDG airport for my return trip! Our month in the Narbonne apartment was beyond expectations. Communication with Laura was always good. The preparation and cleaning of the apartment was thorough and we moved in to make ourselves a "home from home" with every amenity provided to do this. The excellent Narbonne market is within easy walking distance and in itself, is a highlight of this medium sized city. We did not have our own transport but were able to travel around the area either by bus, train (when not on strike!) or with 24 hour car rentals. Other days were spent people watching alongside the canal or in the large square. All this added up to give us a very genuine French experience! Thank you Laura!
