About Me
Vis-à-vis her Detroit-based imprint, Salt & Cedar, Megan O’Connell has generated letterpress editions that have been collected in archives and museums, and created live for the visitors in sites such as the Balvenie Rare Craft Collection [curated by Anthony Bourdain] and MoMA. Letterform is both source and subject of her practice, as she collaborates with an international roster of artists and writers. She is currently artist-in-residence at p98a [Berlin] where she is immersed in researching and using heritage German and Italian foundry type. O’Connell holds an MFA in Intermedia from the University of Iowa [1994], where she studied with Hans Breder. After graduating, she was offered a teaching fellowship that eventually turned into a long-term position at the University of Oregon. As Director of the Typography Lab for a dozen years, she grew the program exponentially. Other academic appointments include: Colorado College, Maine College of Art, University of Maine and Wayne State University. A selected list of lecture and workshop venues includes TypeCon, MoMA, The 4th International Conference on the Book, Mildred’s Lane, Walker Art Center, ATypI, Pickwick Press, Wolfe Editions, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Oberlin College and the bauhaus-archiv .
