This light-filled guest house is a perfect writer's/scholar’s retreat situated in the lovely seaside village of Stony Creek, Connecticut, twelve miles from Yale in New Haven. Adjacent to the main house, it is a private, self-contained residence with its own independent access. The main floor houses the master bedroom and bathroom, a separate study, and an open plan living, dining and kitchen area under a cathedral ceiling. A captain's ship ladder leads to the spacious and bright second bedroom/office/studio in the open loft above. A door from the living area opens onto a wide balcony. Beautiful, old growth trees provide the backdrop from the apartment's many windows. The apartment is fully furnished and equipped with all basic necessities: linen, appliances, dishes etc. It is centrally heated and cooled. It has a smart wood burning stove to brighten dark wintry days and ceiling fans for when you don't want the air conditioning. There's a flat screen TV with Apple TV for streaming, and high speed internet with wifi. You may be able to borrow our kayaks if you so wished. Step out and walk down to the beach to watch the sun slip into the water at dusk. Stony Creek is a very special place, hidden away in plain sight. It is an old oystering and quarry workers' village (its quarries still yield the famous pink granite) surrounded by Long Island Sound and its numberless Thimble islands. Further back in time it was a favoured summering and fishing spot of the region's Native American tribes. It’s changed of course but still remains a charming, eclectic place. Our house and apartment is located in the heart of the village across the street from the water, a short ramble to its many attractions: the little public beach with its gazebo and waterfront park; the Stony Creek Market, an excellent deli and pizza place, as well as the Thimbleberry Cafe; the Willoughby Wallace library and the Bayview Park with its basketball court and playground; our very own post office; a little gift shop, sundry art galleries, a newly restored theatre; and the town dock from where you could catch a boat for a cruise around the islands or launch a kayak. Beyond all these conveniences and curiosities, are the immediately accessible walking, biking and hiking trails across beautiful salt marshes (look out for egrets, herons, ibises, osprey...) through deep woods, and along Stony Creek's gold coast. Fall is brilliant here and in the winter, when the snow falls, it becomes a magical place. The seasons are beautiful and the sunsets over the water always spectacular. The natives are friendly and involved in doing all manner of interesting things. Stop & Shop (the supermarket), the Stony Creek Package store (some nice wines), pharmacies, cleaners, gas stations, and a nice gym at the local Y are within a 5 minute drive. Ten minutes down the scenic Rt. 146 will bring you into Guilford, a quintessential New England town with its classic Green, cafes and coffee shops, and Breakwater Books. There's also the cornucopia of Bishops Farm Market (which is more than it's name implies). A little further down the winding road and you're in Madison where you can catch art house movies at the the Arts Cinema, find excellent cheeses at the Cheese Shop or browse through a great collection of books at RJ Julia's, yet another independent bookstore. Ten minutes in the other direction will bring you to the centre of Branford and its several excellent restaurants. It's 15 minutes to New Haven and Yale which offer a rich stew of cultural, intellectual and culinary delights. And then, of course, an hour and half away, there's New York City! Our small family lives in the main house. Your lives do not have to intersect with ours, but we're available if assistance or advice is required. Welcome.
