Review for listing #106878 - Unique 2 bed in Queen Anne Vic close to MIT/Harvard: 1) I am the current tenant of this property and my lease is set to expire on 31 May 2017. 2) I do not recommend this property "Unique 2 bed in Queen Anne Vic close to MIT/Harvard" nor the person with the username "ALDONA" who listed, for the following reasons: 3) The property is advertised by a couple with a photograph and with the username "ALDONA". The owners are Alan Z. and Aldona C. 4) When I rented this apartment in July of 2016, electric and gas utilities were not included in the advertised rent which was $2,700 a month. The original lease I signed stated that I was responsible for electric and gas utility bills. 5) However, at time of signature of lease in July 2016, the Landlord had not disclosed that (at least one) system(s) in his house shared the gas supply with the advertised property. The advertised property is the converted attic above their house. Landlord only disclosed the fact that the gas bill I was responsible for also provided gas to at least one system in his house in October 2016, six weeks after I moved in and this only in response to me questioning a handwritten $5 deduction he made on a gas bill. 6) Landlord’s defense was that he also had a gas meter for his house. I protested that it was impossible for me to know the extent of the interconnection of his house’s systems with the gas meter that I was responsible for per the lease and requested a new arrangement where I pay a capped amount for heat and hot water. Landlord originally refused with an email where he threatened to cut off the heating if I did not pay whatever the bill showed in full. 7) Landlord followed up with rude, aggressive and sarcastic emails, including one where he said he thought I was smarter because I go to MIT… 8) When, as a result of the above unacceptable events and behavior, I terminated the lease with official notice, the Landlord’s wife, Aldona C., who is the person who listed this property on Sabbatical Homes, made an agreement with me that my gas bill would be capped to no more than $50 a month. This agreement was documented by exchanges of emails between me and Aldona C. 9) The new agreement for gas bills was observed by both sides from November 2016 to February 2017 (four months) with me paying reduced amounts for gas to the Landlord. On one occasion Alan Z. responded “That’s fine.” when I checked with him that I will pay only $50 for the gas and not the amount shown on the bill he had sent me. 10) Near the end of my lease, the landlord wanted to send prospective tenants to view the apartment with less than 4 hours notice to me. I protested and requested reasonable notice. I also insisted that every prospective tenant viewing the apartment should be accompanied by either myself, the Landlord or his wife, so that I could be sure that my personal property (and the Landlord’s furnishings in the apartment that I was responsible for) would be safe. 11) The Landlord was resisting my reasonable request and kept insisting that his real estate agent could also accompany prospective tenants when I wasn’t there. In connection with showing the property to prospective tenants, Landlord also claimed that his estate agent had “every right” to have a key to my apartment! I strongly protested to him and to his agent stating that no third party has ANY right to hold a key to the apartment where I am the Tenant and immediately after that his agent claimed that he doesn’t have and never had a key to my apartment. 12) Since then, the showings are coordinated between me and the Landlord’s wife. As always I make every effort to accept all appointments made with reasonable notice, without changing the times or days if I can help it. Several showings have taken place. 13) As soon as I paid the last rent on May 1st, the Landlord sent me two months’ worth of gas bills. 14) When I notified the amount I would pay for the gas bills of March and April, the Landlord disowned at first claimed that the agreement was different and demanded double of what he was owed for gas bills. The Landlord’s version of the agreement was not supported by the emails between me and his wife, Aldona C. 15) When I protested and sent all the evidence that we had a written agreement that he was aware of, he stated that he is the Landlord, that I had “manipulated” his wife, and then claimed that there is “no clear agreement” therefore “we must revert to the lease” and demanded an even higher amount. 16) With all that has happened I have not had peace in this otherwise charming apartment. I have already found another place to live. 17) When my new Landlord requested a reference from this Landlord Alan Z. and from his wife Aldona C. they did not respond and Alan wrote to me that they would not respond because he had never seen a tenant as difficult as me. I asked Alan to respond to the request for a reference and gave him permission to share all the emails I had exchanged with him and his wife with any Landlord asking for a reference for me. 18) The toilet blocks on a regular basis. Future tenants who aren’t experienced with unblocking toilets should be aware that the plumber recommended by Alan Z. charged $160 for a 5 minute toilet unblocking job. 19) The old panelled window in the study area lets in a draft when it is cold and windy outside, this draft goes straight to the spot where the study desk is. I had notified Alan Z. to fix it and the future tenant should check that the fix has been done.

***RESPONSE FROM LISTER**** This is a response to a review posted by GL about me and my rental, "Unique 2 bed in Queen Anne Vic close to MIT/Harvard”. I am Aldona Charlton. There are several misrepresentations and falsehoods in GL’ account of his issues... We have had many wonderful tenants through the years, but were quite unlucky this time. I cannot in good conscience provide a reference for GL and I sincerely wish the best to anyone he deceives into renting to him.
