1860s townhouse 4 blocks from Harvard Yard
3 3/4 floors of a four-story 1860s townhouse 4 blocks from Harvard Yard, 1/2 block from Cambridge Library and playground: $5,400/month including utilities (heat/AC, phone/WiFi) and two off-street parking spaces. The house is semi-furnished: the current furnishings, described below, can be rearranged as needed.
Two bedrooms (each approx 14X15') on the third floor share a renovated bath with whirlpool tub. The sunny front bedroom has a full-size French antique brass bed, plus a large closet. The quiet back bedroom has a king platform bed with side shelves, antique bureau, and a large closet. Also on this floor, adjoining the front bedroom, is a 6X10 study with teak desk and shelving; it could be converted, as needed, to a small additional bedroom. Another 6X10 bedroom on the 4th floor (part of which is given over to the owner's long-term storage) is also available; it has an antique full-size bed and shelving.
The ground floor consists of an open living room/kitchen with working fireplace; couch; antique sideboard; washer-dryer; L-shaped kitchen (the woodwork is dated, but the appliances -- stovetop, double-oven, and dishwashe -- are new); and a half-bath. There's a sunny patio in front, and a large fenced back yard, adjoined by two off-street parking spaces.
The second-floor library/living room, with a balcony overlooking the floor below, features a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf, turntable (with LPs), sofa, antique Heriz rug, side tables, and a newly restored 1906 Steinway grand.
The house is well suited to scholars or professionals (classical musicians especially) seeking a quiet, comfortable, peaceful setting in an ideal location. If a match seems promising, we'll send a copy of a boilerplate Massachusetts rental agreement, with highlighted amendments particular to this property.
Visits can be arranged by appointment. In inquiring, please tell us something about yourself, what you're seeking, and for how long. Long-term renters will be given preference.
P.S. We can't consider exchanges at present, but we're interested (eventually) in France, Italy, or the Caribbean. The maximum exchange would be 2 months, minimum 2 weeks. We also have a house and cottage on Nantucket and a pied-a-terre in midtown Manhattan, both available for exchange.
