3 bed / 2 bath Harvard Square condo

Great three bedroom, two bathroom basement unit convenient to everything, with no shared walls and only one other basement unit. Dignified, secure building across the street from the Radcliffe Quad. Laundry, storage, and bike storage rooms, as well as access to the beautiful private backyard, are just down the hall.

Some utilities (water, garbage, recycling, heat) are included. Electric/gas are not included but have averaged about $100/month for the past five years for first three unrelated occupants, then a family of five. Internet/cable are not included, and cost would depend on your provider.

We realize that we may not be asking full market rent (based on realtor response) for our unit, but it was a great deal and situation for us as a student family and we don't want to be stereotypical "out of town landlords" trying to gouge people, but prefer to cover our costs and have people in our home who will take care of our place and hopefully appreciate the location and situation.

This unit was available earlier this late summer/fall, but the 9/1 lease we were anticipating fell through at the very last minute and then we didn't manage to find another tenant before the beginning of the school year hit, so we've now reduced the rent through the end of the year to acknowledge that we're off the standard renting cycle!

(more verbose description follows :)

We purchased this 3 bedroom 2 bathroom condo in Harvard Square when we moved to the east coast for a doctoral program at HGSE in 2011 and lived there with our three boys for our two years in Cambridge.

The location is excellent - it's one of two basement units at 52 Garden street - across the street from the Radcliffe Quad (and Harvard shuttle stop), 0.4 miles from the Harvard Graduate School of Education on Appian Way, 0.4 miles to Harvard Law, 0.6 miles to Harvard Square T and buses. It's just blocks from the nearby Harvard Botanic Gardens preschool, the Harvard Dance Center and Observatory, Graham & Parks public elementary school & playground, and the bus stop for other Cambridge public schools is across the street at the end of the block.

There is decent space (we and our three boys all fit well!) and natural light is good even though it's a basement unit. It worked really well for us, especially since the bedrooms are around a corner from the living room for great separation of space, both bathrooms are quite spacious, there’s a little office nook at the end of the hallway, and the kitchen was remodeled with all new appliances and granite counters while we were there. Being in the basement was great for us, as our boys could run and jump to their hearts content, plus laundry is just down the hall, as is our storage cage, a bike room, and the door to the backyard. It's a very friendly building, with beautiful gardens and great neighbors. Parking is by permit on the street, and we honestly never had any problems finding parking close by - more than a block away maybe twice in two years.

The unit is currently mostly unfurnished (currently there: wood shelving, not amazing kitchen table & chairs, leather couch, expandable table, TV). We do have some basics in storage (airbed, cot, sleeping bag, etc,) that may be used until permanent furniture is secured.

About Me
We are a family of five - one lifelong educator (teacher, principal, now superintendent), one co-parent and support staff, and three boys (14, 11, and 7). We parents met as students at Berkeley High School, and our boys went through Berkeley schools until 2011, when we uprooted so that Jason could attend a doctoral program at Harvard. Now back in the Bay Area, we find ourselves in a wonderful Albany home with a backyard cottage and space perfect for sharing.
