The ground floor apartment is located in a secure gated complex on Rathdowne Street Carlton opposite the Royal Exhibition Building and Melbourne Museum. The accommodation upstairs consists of two bedrooms (one double, one single), a bathroom and laundry with an open plan living/dining area plus kitchen on the lower floor. The living area opens onto a large landscaped central courtyard with well maintained garden features. The complex has a sauna with a lap-pool for use by guests as well as a pleasant BBQ area. There is secure underground parking.

Features include television, telephone, heating, Wi-Fi internet access, CD player with radio, dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer.


Our apartment complex is in Rathdowne Street opposite the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and the Melbourne Museum. It is within easy walking distance to Melbourne's central shopping precinct, to the State Library of Victoria, to the theatre complexes, to Melbourne’s China Town as well as to Carlton's popular Lygon Street with its cosmopolitan restaurants and boutique shops. Melbourne University, RMIT University and the large public hospitals are close by. A tourist shuttle bus stops virtually at the door which runs every 30 minutes around the Melbourne CBD and on to Southbank, the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Arts precinct at Southbank includes the National Art Gallery of Victoria and State theatres for opera and drama performances. Adjacent to these is the Southbank complex with many shops, restaurants, hotels and the Crown Casino.

Transport. As well as the tourist shuttle bus there are public bus lines that travel along Rathdowne Street. Trams can be accessed in Nicholson Street which is a pleasant walk through the Carlton Gardens opposite the complex. Suburban and country trains can be accessed via the nearby underground City Loop.

We are a retired professional couple in our 70's. We have two adult daughters who do not usually travel with us. One daughter has settled in Iceland with her husband and son and is a graduate of both The University of Melbourne, Australia and the University of Iceland. Our other daughter is a graduate from both Curtin University and the University of Western Australia and is currently working at a gold mine in outback Western Australia. We are non smokers. We have a keen interest in antiques, classical music, opera, history, photography and family genealogy. We enjoy walking, shopping and exploring cities, galleries and historical sites.

I am fortunate to have met in person Mr. and Mrs. Valerie and Des Appleton from Melbourne, Australia. They stayed for 10 days last July, in my Paris apartment. They are very careful and appreciative guests. I would highly recommend them to other Sabbatical Homes apartment owners, and I look forward to meeting the Appletons again in the future.
