Tuscany country home by the sea

THE PROPERTY: Part of what used to be a Primary School, recently refurbished, the property is surrounded by a lawn, with trees and flowery bushes, among open fields and on the east side borders with one neighbor.
The coast, with long stretches of sandy beaches is a fifteen minutes drive away, half an hour by bike.
The property boasts four spacious double bedrooms, three bathrooms, kitchen, dining room, living room with fireplace. It has got 19 windows overlooking the countryside, wi-fi internet connection and TV.
It ha PRIVATE PARKING for three cars.
OWNER Laura is a retired University Professor, she is also a writer and a translator.
THE VIA BOLGHERESE, in the Livorno Province, lays in the renowned COSTA DEGLI ETRUSCHI area, Maremma, and is one of the nicest roads in the Toscana hills and it stretches between the medieval village of Bolgheri (8 km), to CASTAGNETO CARDUCCI (6 km). It runs parallel to the ancient roman via AURELIA, where you can find the villege of DONORATICO (2km), with supermarkets, bars, post office, car rental etc.
Just minutes away from the property (5 km) are long BEACHES, trimmed by mediterranean pinewoods: MARINA DI CASTAGNETO (5KM), MARINA DI BIBBONA (10 KM), SAN VINCENZO (10KM) with its tourist port.
In the immediate surroundings, heading south along the via della Principessa toward Piombino is the stunning BARATTI gulf (25 km, beach, pinewood and rocky coast), and the ancient etruscan port village of POPULONIA, with its archeological park and Museum. Further south, toward FOLLONICA is renown CALA VIOLINA (SS1, exit at Scarlino, the follow Punta Ala: 1h and 20 minutes trek to reach the beach), which owes its name to the sound of its crystal sand, and hip PUNTA ALA
30 minutes (36 km) north of the property sits CASTIGLIONCELLO, elegant holiday location, with rocky coast and famous restaurants.


From the LIVORNO port (45 minutes, 70 km northbound by car), ferries leave daily to the wild islands of CAPRAIA and GORGONA in the Tuscan Arcipelago. From PIOMBINO (25 minutes, 43 KM southbound) the beautiful ELBA island, with its stunning coasts, beaches and crystal clear waters can be reached by ferry or hovercraft.


The hills around Bolgheri and Castagneto are still pristine and offer great opportunity for long or short treks in the CORNIA valley, near Sassetta, Monteverdi, Volterra or toward Suvereta and back to the Via Aurelia. All tracks are well looked after, with excellent signaling and can be found in the Club Alpino Italiano guides.
Just one hour away by car, near Grosseto, lays the stunning nature reserve of the PARCO DELL'UCCELLINA (99 KM), where it is possible to book guided tours, both by car or walking, to the magic Cala di Forno bay.
Of particular interest are itineraries in the COLLINE METALLIFERE Mineral Park (minerals, mines and castles), between MASSA MARITTIMA and MONTEROTONDO and in the Parco Minerario di San Silvestro nearby, which offers a rare example of medieval archaeology.

ACQUA VILLAGE a Cecina (20 min. km. 20)


Very close are the Terme di SASSETTA (30 m, 20 km), on the hills and the Parco Termale di VENTURINA, (15 km), on the Via Aurelia, with its fitness facilities, tennis and swimming pools.
Only one hour away, passed Grosseto, are the ancient hot springs of SATURNIA (1 hr 445 m, 134 Km), with its mud baths, therapeutical waters and natural hot water springs and waterfalls among olive trees.


The via Bolgherese and its surroundings are favourite destinations for bikers around Europe, because of the stunning beauty of its open and not too busy roads and because of the variety of routes to suit all abilities and preferences. In Donoratico, via vecchia Aurelia 25, CICLO SPORT sells, repairs and hires bicycles. It also organizes bike tours. Ph: 0565.777149.


Bolgheri and its famous Viale dei Cipressi (a 5 km cypress tree fringed road, that goes from the via Aurelia to the Bolgheri Castle, dwelling of the Gherardesca family), are home to the glorious D'Ormello Olgiata racehorse breeders (Ribot, Nearco), founded in 1904 by the Marquis Incisa.
The horse breeding tradition still continues today in the area, and it is possible to hire horses for countryside or beach tours.


The Bolgheri area is known worldwide for the outstanding quality of its wines. The tradition was started by the Antinori family and there are now many state of the art wineries, that offer guided tours with wine tasting .
The property is located just on what is known as the WINE ROUTE (STRADA DEL VINO), close to the renowned winery Ornellaia and exclusive Sassicaia, in the San Guido Estate. Other famous wineries in the immediate surroundings include GUADO AL MELO (1KM), The Argentiera Estate, Campo al Noce, Campo alla Sughera.
The PETRA DI SUVERETO Winery (20 minutes driving) constitutes a contemporary architecture monument in itself, as it was designed by swiss architect Mario Botta. Visits last one hour including the tasting and require booking.


Maremma is famous for the quality of its food, (wild boar specialties, steaks, hams and pecorino cheeses). Fish is excellent and fresh, particularly on the coastal areas: LA PINETA, near Marina di Bibbona, is an excellent and sophisticated restaurant, offering fish specialties. A good alternative for fish menus is MIRAMARE, on the beachfront in Marina di Castagneto (0565.74761). On the very same via Bolgherese, near home, old ZI MARTINO restaurant (0565.76000) has typical menus in a modern yet cosy setting.
In Bolgheri village: ENOTECA TOGNONI (0565.760001 and website), In Castagneto DA UGO (0565.763746), fish specialties. In Segalari (2Km), L'ORIZZONTE (0565.763796). Ate the very entrance of the VIALE DEI CIPRESSI, leadin towards Bolgheri, OSTERIA SAN GUIDO (0565.749693). Other restaurants, in villages or on the countryside, can be found on the internet. Very good ice cream at the CAFFE DELLA POSTA in Bolgheri.


Each and everyone of the villages and sites in the area deserves its own presentation: BOLGHERI, with its Castle, Bibbona, Casale, enchanting Massa Marittima, withs its summer music and theatre events, the museum, and the 12th century Cathedral, its famous Piazza overlooking the sea and the nearby abbeys and monasteries.
One hour away are VOLTERRA (46 KM), known for its alabaster, with its Etruscan Museum, the belvedere, the Medicean fortress; the medieval town of SAN GIMINIANO (87 KM). Pisa (the leaning Tower, the Piazza dei Miracoli, the Lungarni and the Museum)is 79 km away, Lucca (100 km on the motorway), with its beautiful churches and city walls and finally LIVORNO (70 km on the motorway), wit its famous Medicean Port, originally designed by Buontalenti in the 16th century, under Ferdinando I De' Medici and finished under Cosimo II, at the beginning of the 17th century.

Lara Barile is a retired university professor from the University of Siena, Italy, where she used to teach Modern an Contemporary Italian Literature. She has been Professeur Invité at Université de Montréal, Visiting Professor at University College London and Fulbright Visiting Professor at University of Chicago in 2006. Awards: Premio Ossi di seppia 1991, Premio Calvino Inedito 1997, Premo Accademia dei Lincei Per Letterature Europee 2007 and Edinburgh Gadda Prize 2010. She is author of short stories, translations and 10 volumes on european and italian literature, both monographs and essays, specializing on Eugenio Montale, Vittorio Sereni and Amelia Rosselli.
