Charleston Cactus Cottage
This charming 1950's cottage is available yearly from April through September. Located in the desirable Riverland Terrace neighborhood on James Island, it's conveniently situated between bustling downtown Charleston and the beautiful beaches of the coast. It's less than a 10 minute drive to the Medical University of Charleston and about 12 minutes to the College of Charleston.
The cottage has two good-sized bedrooms, one with a queen platform bed from Modernica Case Study and the other with two twin beds featuring vintage headboards made right here in Charleston by Dixie Furniture. In fact, the "locally sourced and produced" is kind of a theme for the house. All the bedding and linens are from Redland Cotton, who grows their own cotton to produce completely American-made sheets and towels. Each bedroom includes ample storage via custom built-ins, with open shelving in the guest room and soft-closing drawers in the master.
Speaking of baths, this one includes a clawfoot soaking tub with sunflower shower overhead so you can unwind after a long day. The bathroom was completely remodeled in 2019 and is highlighted by shiplap walls, a marble topped vanity and eco-flush toilet.
The living room is centered around a 94" wide slipcovered sofa from Arhaus. It's down-filled bench cushion makes it perfect for late afternoon naps or Netflix binges. The 55" Samsung Serif television is loaded with all manner of streaming apps and options, included at no extra cost.
There is a large dining room with a long pine table and vintage rattan desk which looks out onto the bamboo and tree-filled back yard. It's a great spot to work or study (or bird watch).
The kitchen underwent a partial renovation in 2020. Features include a Spanish tile wall, floating shelves, sustainable rubberwood countertops, a workstation sink and faucet. New appliances like the Bertazzoni electric range and microwave make cooking a breeze and the Fisher and Paykel refrigerator can hold all your groceries from Harris Teeter up the street. If you like to grill, there's a professional tabletop Cuisinart outside on the back porch. For coffee lovers, there is an SCA-approved Braun grinder and brewer setup to keep you caffeinated and productive.
There is laundry and an additional bathroom with outdoor shower in the rear of the property (an old school "outhouse) which is perfect for rinsing off when you're back from Folly Beach just 15 minutes away. There is also a workshop in the rear of the property that can be used for large-scale painting, yoga, or a gym.
Riverland Terrace is quiet, peaceful and lined with the famous live oaks that really create a sense of magic and wonder. It's so close to the action (coffee, grocery and awesome vintage shops are less than two miles away) but secluded enough to really let you disconnect if you need to.
