PEACEFUL RETREAT WITH DRAMATIC VIEWS FROM PRIVATE GARDEN AND TERRACE IN HEART OF HISTORIC CORDES-SUR-CIEL
This unique home, located above a ceramics gallery, was built into the original ramparts of 13th Century Cordes-sur-Ciel, a hilltop Bastide town, founded in 1222 by Count Raimond VII during the Albigensian Crusade. Voted ‘Le Village Préferé’ by the French in 2014, Cordes-in-the-Sky, known for its striking beauty, sometimes gives the impression of floating on a sea of clouds, rising up from the valley below. With its long history, mysteries and legends, and its magnificent Gothic houses, Cordes has continued to attract and inspire artists, writers and historians, many whom have made the site their home.
The gallery and home, situated on the main cobblestone street, have been carefully restored and renovated by the owners, a British architect and his partner, who have worked to find sensitive and understated ways to update the original building, while preserving its ancient charm and atmosphere. Throughout, stone walls, hardwood floors and exposed beams are complemented by antique French country furniture. Oriental rugs, artwork and ceramics bring warmth and color to the rooms.
The large gallery and studio have been an integral part of the artistic heritage of Cordes for generations. In the living quarters above, an inviting salon with Norwegian wood stove and attached kitchen offers sunlit views from traditional French windows. A windowed oak door leads down to a walled south-facing garden with views to the countryside. Facing the town, there is a guest bedroom with a tastefully renovated ensuite bathroom.
In the spacious loft, under a vaulted ceiling with ancient beams, a stunning master bedroom extends the full length of the house, opening to a large terrace with unforgettable views of the sky and the valley far below.
