Stylish 1BR Retreat Near 3 Subways ~ Garden, Laundry, Private Entrance ~ Pets OK!

Are you looking for an affordable but private place to stay during your sabbatical, research residency, or vacation in NYC? Are you interested in experiencing a multicultural, ungentrified neighborhood while you're here? Consider our renovated one-bedroom basement suite with living room (sofa bed & 55-inch flatscreen TV), bathroom, kitchenette, washer/dryer, office nook, and separate entrance. It offers privacy, proximity to subways (7-12 minute walk to Q, 2, and 5 trains), and numerous amenities within walking distance in Ditmas Park (dining, bars, organic grocery stores, boutiques, markets, parks, four gyms, yoga studio, urgent care facility). We are two college professors who own and live in the house, and we offer this accommodation exclusively to travelers--no one lives in it full-time. Enjoy your own pied-à-terre in Brooklyn! Included: wireless internet, linens and towels, electricity, gas, water, and professional cleaning service before and after your stay. Pets OK upon approval.

AVAILABILITY: Typically, our suite is available for a maximum of 6-8 weeks. In general, it is best for short-term stays or short-term research fellows.

=== A 1912 TOWNHOUSE in AUTHENTIC BROOKLYN ===
NYC’s City Council recently designated Flatbush “Little Haiti” because of its historical role as a sanctuary for Haitian families. Flatbush is a bustling, working-class neighborhood known and loved for its diversity (residents are predominantly Caribbean, African American, and Latino/a), availability of public transit, and affordability. We are near three subway lines (Q, 2, and 5), which will get you almost anywhere you might like to go. Depending on your destination, it takes anywhere from 40 to 80 minutes to travel from our house to Manhattan via subway or bus.

=== THE SPACE ===
This urban retreat occupies the basement level of our 1912 brick townhouse. We are professors who walk to work (our university campus is nearby).

The stylish LIVING ROOM features:
-- exposed brick, recessed lighting, mid-century modern decor
-- CB2 "Flex" sofa bed
-- 55-inch flatscreen "smart" TV with Netflix (free), Hulu (free), Amazon streaming video (for purchase), and more
-- DVD player and our small library of films and musicals
-- office nook with laser printer (connect via provided USB cable)
-- our expansive collection of sci-fi novels, historical fiction, and travel/language books
-- WIFI throughout the apartment

The newly renovated KITCHENETTE with LAUNDRY includes:
-- undercounter refrigerator/freezer
-- 2-burner electric cooktop
-- microwave
-- 12-cup coffeemaker
-- toaster
-- all cooking equipment and essentials (spices, olive oil, vinegar)
-- small dining area
-- Electrolux washer with steam
-- LG gas dryer with steam

BEDROOM features super-firm queen bed, a full closet, plenty of shelves to store your stuff, and (in the summer) an air-conditioner. If you leave the bedroom door open, the air conditioner can cool the living room as well.

BATHROOM features a tiled shower and a showerhead with five comfort settings.

BACKYARD features a patio, a table for four, and a Weber charcoal grill.

=== FLATBUSH: "A FIT FOR MANY TASTES AND BUDGETS" ===
A lively and diverse neighborhood populated by working families, Flatbush ("Little Haiti") was recently highlighted by The New York Times as one of Brooklyn's up-and-coming areas: "Flatbush, Brooklyn, a Fit for Many Tastes and Budgets," 16 May 2015. We chose to make Flatbush our home because of its casual atmosphere, friendly neighbors, and proximity to trendy Cortelyou Road, which offers a plethora of restaurants, bars, cafes, and other amenities. Residents commute to Manhattan by subway or express bus. The neighborhood is bounded by Ditmas Park (west), Midwood (south), Prospect Lefferts-Gardens (north), and East Flatbush.

In 15 minutes or less, you can walk to:
-- Dozens of restaurants, bars, and cafes
-- A huge supermarket (5-minute walk) and two organic grocery stores (15-minute walk)
-- The Cortelyou Road Farmers Market (Sundays from 9am-1pm)
-- Third Root Community Health Center, a worker-owned yoga studio with massage and acupuncture practitioners on site
-- The spectacularly restored Kings Theatre (rock, jazz, reggae, theater, more)
-- Four gyms (Crunch, Planet Fitness, 24-Hour Fitness, Retro Fitness)
-- Two outlet stores (Gap, Old Navy)
-- Brooklyn's landmarked art-deco Sears
-- Prospect Park, Brooklyn's version of Central Park (20-minute walk)
-- Smorgasburg, the celebrated weekly food festival featuring NYC's best artisanal vendors (in Prospect Park on Sundays during warm months)

=== OTHER THINGS to NOTE ===
We want you to be comfortable and to have a great time! So, in case it matters to you, we think you should know:
-- We are located in Central Brooklyn. Depending on your destination, it will take anywhere from 40-80 minutes to get to Manhattan. Our nearest subway stops are the Q at Beverley Road and the 2/5 at Beverly Road.
-- This is a basement suite. This means that you have access to our outdoor space (cozy, shady backyard w/ charcoal grill), which is a rare amenity in New York City, but the windows are small (in bedroom and kitchenette only). To provide light and ventilation to the living room, there is a full-view glass storm door with a retractable screen at the basement entrance. Please note that the ceilings in the suite range from 7 to 8 feet high (2.1-2.4 meters).
-- Our house is located next to an auto-repair shop (typically open Mon-Sat 9am-7pm). Our block is an eclectic mix of businesses, century-old townhouses, and apartment buildings--authentic Brooklyn.
-- The kitchenette does not have an oven or dishwasher, but it does have everything else (electric cooktop, microwave, etc.) Plus, there is a charcoal grill/barbecue in the backyard.

About Me
We are professors at Brooklyn College (CUNY). Amy has lived in New York City for 25 years, but 23 of them have been in Brooklyn. Scott has lived in Brooklyn for 20 years. We love to cook and, when we travel (which is often), we tend to focus on local food traditions, purveyors, and dining. We also love music, theater, and learning languages.
