Executive style home (3BR) in beachside Melbourne suburb, at gateway to beautiful Mornington Peninsula

Location: Our house is in a quiet street in an area known locally as Long Island. There are no roads to cross between our house and the beach. Access to the picturesque and safe Frankston beach is just 3 minutes' walk. We are a 5 minute drive or a short cycle to the local university campus (Monash University - Peninsula campus); or a stroll to the closest suburban train station, large local shopping centre, cinemas and many local restaurants. Also in close range are parks, walking and cycling tracks, golf courses, local markets, galleries and wineries. Frankston also marks the entrance to the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne’s most popular year-round recreation destination.

The home: It is modern, light and bright in a double-storey town-house with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms. Downstairs are the double garage, 2 bedrooms (single bed and desk in each), bathroom and laundry, plus an open plan 2nd living area/multi-purpose area and courtyards. Upstairs we have the (open plan) main living and dining areas, balcony wtih sea view, fully equipped kitchen and the master bedroom with KS bed and a large full ensuite bathroom. We find it a great environment for both living and research/writing. The furnishings are clean, modern, comfortable and attractive. The house is well-secured including deadbolts and locking windows and gates.

The lifestyle: The whole house and outdoor courtyards are designed for protection from prevailing winds and the hot afternoon sun, and ideally suited to relaxed indoor/outdoor living, dining and entertaining. The courtyard garden areas are very low maintenance, there is a bicycle and beach chairs in the garage. If you like walking, then in addition to the sandy beach, you can choose from several walking tracks through treed areas, creek-side or beach-side.

Practicalities: The house has under-floor (slab) heating downstairs plus split system heating/air-conditioning upstairs, a fully equipped kitchen with various time-saving appliances, ducted vacuum, flat screen TVs, DVD player and stereo; a king size bed in the master bedroom, a single bed in each other bedroom, plus a fold-out sofa bed in the 2nd living/multi-purpose area. Also included is broadband internet network connection (wireless and plug-in), and a printer too.

The price ($800 per week) is for a minimum three month stay; a discount will be available for stay longer than four months. Fortnightly cleaning is included along with internet and phone service. Payment for gas, water and electricity will be separate, based on usage (or utilities in tenant's name for long stays.

We stayed in Jennifer's Frankston house for the first few months of 2011, while we were on sabbatical. The home is a modern white design with clean lines (I would have loved to fill the walls with bird photos, though...). So, it is easy to keep clean. The home is one of 3 on a lot that extends back to the beach. It has street access, but no direct beach access. Getting to the beach just requires a walk of a few meters down the road.

We enjoyed our visit. We didn't have a car, but the walk to the Frankston-Melbourne train was easy and pleasant through a natural area (or on city streets). The train trip to Melbourne is 1 hour each way, though.

One glitch with the house, which the owner has likely fixed, is that the mechanisms for opening and closing some of the windows became rusted and frozen. In particular, this meant that the vent window above the master shower wouldn't close. Even for a Canadian like me, this became pretty chilly in April and May! I rigged up a covering for the gap.

The kitchen, living room and master bedroom are on the top floor. The extra bedrooms and a sitting area are on the lower floor, next to the front entry and garage. There is no underground basement. This is a different setup than we are used to, but it works fine.
