About Me
I have been associated with Emory and the Psychoanalytic Institute for more than 40 yrs. My husband was a faculty member of both but I am on the faculty of the Institute only. My doctorate is in clinical social work and I have had 4 publications in juried journals. I also was awarded the outstanding dissertation prize at the School of Social work. All my publications were independent of university affiliation. Before going to graduate school at U of Illinois Chicago, I was a peace corps volunteer in Thailand & traveled extensively in the far East. I made my trip home through India, Nepal, and middle east, through what was then Communist East Europe, and the most of the rest of Europe. At that time, one could arrange one's airline ticket to include stays in cities on a direct route. I really did Europe on $5 a day; it was the 60's. After completing my MSW I felt I did not know enough to do the work I chose, psychotherapy, and received a one-year fellowship at the Menninger Foundation in Kansas where I met and married my husband, a Dutch emigre who was widowed and rearing 3 adolescents on his own. Kansas seemed very foreign to me, a world traveler. Raising 3 teens during the 70's was also a novel experience. When our daughter was 8, I commuted 2/1/2 hours each way to University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, to study for my doctorate. By then we had moved to Atlanta, GA; the only available doctoral program in clinical social work was then at Alabama. I had two fellowship there and upon graduation, supervised SW students for both U. of Alabama and Smith College. During my studies, I continued to practice individual and marital psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The course demanded I take a cognate series and I completed that at Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute. My husband, who was a psychoanalyst/psychiatrist, and I had a joint practice in North Atlanta for more than 30 years. After he died 5 year ago, I, more or less, retired. I've visited some of the countries we missed during our marriage since then, the most recent being Chile and Argentina especially Patagonia last Fall.
