About Me
Carol Rodgers is an associate professor of education at the University at Albany, SUNY. Her work has focused on the educational philosophy of John Dewey, reflective practice, presence in teaching, the theory and practice of a humanizing pedagogy, the history of progressive teacher education, and processes of descriptive inquiry. She is the author of “Defining Reflection: Another Look at John Dewey and Reflective Thinking,” winner of the 2004 award for outstanding research in Division K. Her book, with the working title The Art of Teaching: Practicing Presence, will be published by Teachers College Press in March of 2020. She is committed to connecting research to practice and theory to experience. She has taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Senegal, West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, been a teacher trainer in EFL at Galang and Phanat Nikhom Refugee Camps in Southeast Asia (Indonesia and Thailand) and consulted in teacher education and teacher professional development around the United States, Japan, South Africa, New Zealand, and Canada. From 1985 to 2000 she was a professor at the School for International Training (SIT) in Brattleboro, Vermont. In 2011 she was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. She lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.
