Jungle Living in Style

Our home is one of the historic canal-zone houses built in the early 1900’s. It was lovingly renovated in 2012 to restore the historic features while adding conveniences for modern life. The main home is on the second level. It features an en suite master bedroom with queen bed, a second bedroom with a queen bed, a second bathroom with a tub/shower, and a large study that can be converted into a third bedroom. The open plan living area boasts a large modern kitchen with breakfast bar, dining area, living area and office. The kitchen includes a full-size refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, gas stove, and oven. The home is cooled with central air conditioning and ceiling fans and has high ceilings and wood flooring throughout. The living area opens out onto a large elevated deck, featuring a gas grill, teak dining table and chairs and comfy rocking chairs for relaxing. The house is tucked away off the road and is surrounded by forest on three sides, making it one of the most private and quiet homes in Gamboa. There is ample off-street parking and the lawn/garden area is yours to enjoy. The ground floor laundry area houses a washer, dryer, work space and utility sink.

Cleaning service (once per week), gardener (approx. once per month), utilities (electricity to $150 max per month) and Internet are included.

Gamboa is a small community on the edge of the Panama Canal, located at the “end of the road" halfway between the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts and is surrounded by the rainforest of the Soberania National Park.

Gamboa is a Garden City community with lots of green space, large shade trees, and historic canal-zone homes. Hiking, tennis, soccer and biking are favorite activities. Wildlife is abundant – toucans, monkeys, agoutis, iguanas, motmots, boas and sloths have been spotted from our back deck! The famous bird watching area, Pipeline Road, starts right here in Gamboa. Fishing and/or boating trips are also available.

Gamboa is a major center for research for staff and visitors to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI), which opened a new laboratory in Gamboa in 2017. Other STRI facilities, such as Barro Colorado Island, Noas Laboratory, Ancon and Tupper facilities are close by.

Gamboa’s residents work in a variety of fields, such as science, architectural design, medicine, education, carpentry, business and government. People hail not only from Panama, but other Latin American countries as well as Europe and North America and range in age from children to retirees. Along the banks of the Chagres River, two indigenous communities also call Gamboa home.

The Gamboa Discovery School caters to children aged 4 to 10 years. Other private school options are available in the City of Knowledge (Clayton) and other Panama City neighborhoods.

The Gamboa Rainforest Resort, which has restaurant and bar options and a small gift shop, a small convenience store, and a few informal lunch trucks are all located in Gamboa. For other services, Gamboa has easy access to the attractions, shopping and restaurants of Panama City, and beaches and mountain areas can be reached in 1 to 2 hours.

There are wonderful views in Gamboa, of the forests, Canal, Charges River, and the historic single-lane iron and wood access bridge. Ships pass by, seemingly only a stone’s throw away, day and night. The Panama Canal Authority’s dredging division operates out of Gamboa and the Panama Canal Railroad also runs through here.

NEGOTIABLE. Our dog is a super sweet, 8 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback. She likes 2 walks a day and spends the rest of her time lounging around the house.

About Me
Gamboa has been our home for 8 years. We love it for the tranquil atmosphere, historic architecture and the natural setting. I work with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute where I study the evolution of adaptive variation in butterflies. I am also the Dean of Academic Programs. My wife, Valerie, spends her time volunteering on scientific and community projects, and working on environmental policy issues. We’ve lived in many other locations, including North Carolina, Puerto Rico, London, and Ecuador. We love to travel. Our most recent trips have been to Italy, Peru, and the US. We also enjoy entertaining, creating gourmet meals, exercising, including runs with our large dog, and keeping up with the exploits of our 2 grown children. I will be on sabbatical in France and England in 2018.
