Maison d'Eglise renovated stone house in hilltop village

Warm homely Village house in village surrounded by wild beautiful countryside. Modern comforts and within 15 minutes drive to two markets towns and 30 minutes of innumerable places of interest and beauty.

Within walking distance of Rennes-le-Chateau, this south-facing stone house is beautifully finished with natural woods and lime plaster ans is very comfortable in summer and winter. The village of St Ferriol commands stunning views across the Pyrenees and surrounding countryside including forests, vineyards, small orchards and pasture. It is a beautifully finished, stylish and comfortable home and attention has been paid to every detail. The walls are rendered with natural lime plaster and even the insulation is natural hemp. While retaining original features like oak beams there are modern comforts like central heating, wireless internet and a granite top kitchen. There is a bathroom for each bedroom, three WC's and a laundry. The house is also equipped throughout to be baby-safe. In the living room there is a trundle bed that can be used as a single or double for an additional guest.

The house is private and situated in the quiet, charming mountain village of St Ferriol, between the church and the Chateau. Visitors are invited to use the Chateau barbecue terrace and garden or to sit in the sunny pedestrian street in front of the house. A bread van comes to the village every morning and the house is 10 minutes away from two market towns.

It is perfectly located to explore all the region has to offer. All around the area are castles, mountain forests, valleys and garrigue, historic abbeys, romanesque churches, gorges, grottoes and spas. Many of the most famous Cathar sites are only a short drive or cycle ride away. It is less than a two hour's walk away to the hilltop village of Rennes-le-Château, the site of continuing mysteries surrounding the discovery of vast treasures by the local priest over a century ago.

The area is also a delight for those seeking sport and activity holidays. The area is famous for its great road cycle routes. You can hire mountain bikes ("VTTs") from nearby Esperaza. There are many horse riding treks on offer, hang-gliding, white-water rafting, kayaking and canoeing, mountain climbing, fishing and walking…even hot air ballooning! In the winter the Pyreneen slopes are not far a way and many locals take day trips to ski or snowboard. There are two thermal spring swimming pools nearby and several landscaped lakes open to the public.

A number of market towns are within 10 minutes drive you there you can sample Spanish delicacies as well as the local ones, many of them organic: bread, dairy products, honey, vegetables and wild mushrooms.

Local wildlife is also an attraction for many visitors. Because of its varied terrain, the Aude possesses more than twice the number of plant species than the whole of the UK, including some 80 types of orchid. It is similarly rich in animal species, particularly birds.

The property has been used by visitors since 2006 and many references are available.

About Me
We have been living in Ocitannia since 1997 and are renovating the castle of St Ferriol. We enjoy our sabbatical homes clients in the holiday homes that are part of our livelihood. James is a historian and takes historic tours around the castles and abbeys of this beautiful lost corner of France. Our village overlooks a big forest and a cultivated valley with the famous Rennes le chateau on the next hill. It is a richly beautiful region and there is lots of interesting quirky local life as well as the iconic sites of Carcassonne and Montsegur and the Mediterranean mountains and the Pyrenees. We are close to mountains and Med and the cities of Barcelona, Toulouse and Montpellier. We are fond of dogs and cats and have one and a young son. We also enjoy our large herb garden and encourage our visitors to use it and be wowed by the views like we are.

Spacious bright penthouse calm terrace in centre of Carcassonne's renaissance bastideOffered View

My wife and I are just concluding a six week stay at the Carcassonne penthouse, and we really have nothing but good things to say about it.

I'm not sure there is a better location anywhere in Carcassonne. The penthouse is perhaps 30 meters from the main pedestrian street that runs from the train station, which is itself accessible with a short walk, perhaps 10 minutes at most. It's about two blocks from Place Carnot, where sidewalk cafes surround a square with a picturesque fountain and the wonderful farmers' market takes place several times each week. We're also within walking distance of La Cité, the medieval hilltop for which Carcassonne is probably best known. (We're glad to be staying outside of that area, however — it's a bit too touristy for our tastes.) We've discovered a number of wonderful restaurants within a few blocks of the apartment and I'm already wondering how we will cope without having our favorite bakery, Boulangerie Noez at 57 rue de Verdun, just two-and-a-half blocks away.

The penthouse itself is roomy and bright, with windows on the north, south, and west sides. For those that need it, the WiFi Internet connection is robust and fast at over 8 Mbps download. The kitchen is fully furnished and, while we didn't get to use the patio very often — yes, winter even exists in the south of France — we enjoyed it immensely when the weather allowed.

All in all, we've had a very pleasant stay, and after six weeks it has really come to feel like home.
