Description

Our Home. A bright spacious second floor apartment (whole floor) in downtown Reykjavik. The apartment building circa 1929 is set in a large garden in the green wedge of downtown Reykjavik and surrounded by grand houses of a similar style. The apartment comprises one large double bedroom with king size bed and one single bedroom with a single bed plus a office/bedroom which could take a single bed. The lounge and dining rooms and main bedroom overlook the large garden and the kitchen /dining room area provides access to a north-west facing balcony of 7 m2. The bathroom with claw foot bath, separate shower, toilet and laundry is large. The all-electric kitchen is fully equipped with oven and ceramic cook-top set in an island bench, a large imported refrigerator/freezer, coffee percolator and ample cupboard space. The lounge room has a flat screen TV (cable) and there is Wi-Fi internet access. Supermarket, bakery and restaurants are all within 700 m of the apartment. Reykjavik is a culturally diverse city with many cafes, restaurants, galleries and theatres. Quaint galleries, craft shops and fashion stores in Laugarvegur and Skolavordustigur - the two main shopping strips in downtown Reykjavik - are just a 10 minute stroll from the apartment. The National Gallery of Iceland “Listasafn” is 5 minutes walking distance from the apartment and is adjacent to Tjörnin “The Pond” with its vast range of local and migratory water birds. Close by is the harbour with its fleet of fishing boats and excursion craft that provide opportunities for deep sea fishing and whale watching. At one end of the harbour is a Marine Museum and on the foreshore at the other end is the modern and stunning concert hall, “Harpa” with its external glass and metal shell designed by the renowned artist Olafur Eliasson. This is a unique setting to experience the best of Icelandic music and performances. For exciting out-of-town experiences an excursion to the Blue Lagoon and the Glacial Lagoon will not disappoint. The “Golden Circle” tour also provides an excellent introduction to an area close to Reykjavik including Thingvellir National Park - site of the world’s first parliament; Dettifoss waterfall and; thermal geyser fields. For the more adventurous there is clear-water diving at Thingvellir; traversing the glaciers in a Snowmobile or individual snow scooters and exploring the lava fields. Transport The international airport at Keflavik (50 km from Reykjavik) is serviced by a bus from the airport to the BSI bus depot in Reykjavik which is within walking distance of the apartment. Tickets can be purchased in the airport terminal and there are buses scheduled for all arrivals and departures. The BSI bus depot is also the terminus for buses servicing all of Iceland including the Ring road and cross-country routes to northern areas. The Greater Reykjavik area is serviced by a comprehensive network of Straeto buses originating from a downtown depot. Tickets can be purchased from the driver (exact money required) or at the depot. The bus routes include the suburbs and the two major shopping malls Kringlan and Smariland as well as the domestic airport located on the very edge of downtown Reykjavik . Domestic flights are available to most areas of Iceland including the Westfjords and the second largest city, Akureyri, in the north of Iceland. Akureyri also has an international airport. There are many tour companies that can provide transport to tourist sites and specialised vehicles for travelling off-road and over glaciers, snow fields and even amphibious vehicles as used at the Glacial Lagoon to glide between the pieces of glacial ice as they calve off from a tongue of Iceland’s largest glacier,Vatnajökull, eventually melting or floating out to sea.
