Beautiful Large Vintage home in Chicago

My home is a 1907 Victorian with lots of rustic charm. Whenever people enter this house, they tell me it reminds them of their ancestral home- whether that is a farmhouse in France, in the mountains of Nepal, or in Northern Wisconsin. I suppose it makes people feel removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, and in a place where they can completely relax and settle in.

We have had many wonderful professors, students, PhD and post-doc candidates stay in our home with us. Many have been international from Norway, Vienna, and France and we love bringing people of various backgrounds into the house. I am an acupuncturist who is relatively quiet, likes to read, cook, listen to records on our player, and loves to garden in our large and very wild forest-like backyard. I take care of our three chickens in the back who give us a delicious egg a piece each morning while needing very little care in return. We also have a vegetable and herb garden, a pond, and a 100-year old barn in the back. It is a very large lot, over 200ft so there is plenty of space for sitting outside to read, have breakfast, or watch the wildlife that goes on back there. We always have rabbits, birds, and squirrels to observe.

The house has only had 2 owners so it remains very much as it was when it was built, except for new wood windows, and the hard wood floors have all been exposed and finished. There are many antique details that give the house a very warm, rustic, and cozy feel to it. You would share the house with me and have your own room on the top floor which has the most privacy in the house. There is also an optional office for you which is attached to the bedroom. There is one bathroom with a large claw foot tub in it, as well as a guest room which you are welcome to use if you have the occasional guest from out of town. There is also a yoga/meditation room on the top floor, as well as a porch swing, and a berry patch of raspberries, currants, and gooseberries out front. Washer Dryer is free downstairs and all utilities are included. Parking is easy on the street right outside the door. We are very close to the metra which takes you quickly to downtown Chicago, and the CTA which can take you anywhere in the city. We are only a few blocks from Lake Michigan which has a beautiful bike path to take you downtown or through the city itself. Finally, my house is only a 10 minute drive from Northwestern Campus (20 minute train ride), 10 minute walk to Loyola, and 10 minute drive (20 minute train ride) to Depaul Campus. Edgewater is a bustling neighborhood with great cafes, shared garden patches, antique stores and much more, but it still manages to retain a serene residential feel. Most of the people on my block own their home and look out for one another.

I am looking for someone who is relatively quiet, but likes to lead an active life. Please feel free to email me. Available now for a one year or 4-6 month lease with option to renew for longer.

About Me
I am an acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine practitioner who recently returned to Chicago after living abroad for about a decade. I studied Thai Massage in Thailand for several years, then became interested in Buddhist philosophy and meditation so traveled to Kathmandu Nepal to study with a Tibetan lama for a year. While I was there I worked with a very skilled practitioner of Chinese Medicine and so decided to pursue my studies in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine training back in the US. After studying for four years post-graduate, I went back to Asia to volunteer in Nepal, Bali, and Thailand, and then founded a non-profit to send more acupuncture volunteers to work in free Nepali clinics. I enjoy my work immensely and still travel to Asia a few times each year. I moved back to Chicago a few years go and bought a beautiful 100 year old home last year. I still travel quite a bit and so am looking for a responsible roommate to share my peaceful space with. When I am in Chicago I am also an avid tango dancer and yoga practitioner. I enjoy having the occasional dinner party with tango friends, or guest for breakfast in the garden, but in general the house is very quiet and calm.

I stayed here for 6 months, and had a great time. Grainne is a wonderful person and a good host. The house is old and charming - located in a street that feels quiet even though it is close to the two big streets Devon and Clark. You can walk to the 'L'-train red line in 15 minutes, or walk 2 minutes and catch various buses that will take you north or south. The area is interesting and diverse with several nice places to eat, and interesting locations.

As I was working at Northwestern, I found the location just perfect - a quick bike ride, bus ride or train ride to NU campus - but not actually situated in Evanston - which gives you the possibility to explore the rest of Chicago more. Andersonville, with many great cafes and places to check out is a 15-20 minute walk away.

Furthermore, only a 15 minute walk/5 minute run to Chicagos prime selling point: the beautiful and gigantic lake with its really good running/biking paths. I would go running there as often as I could. Truly something!

The room gives you a view of the back yard (full of trees and greenery), giving the impression of sleeping in a treehouse (in a positive way).

Highly recommended. If you are like me, a person that enjoy the company of other people, you will have a great time.
