Zen loft in Honolulu

HALE WEHE is an ECO lodge with two lofts and connected house perched on a cliff under an enormous rubber tree over the Pauoa Valley, backed by a rain forest that runs the entire Pacific Heights ridge. There’s a waterfall in the back when it rains. Wildlife flourishes. You will hear birds instead of traffic. You can find trails minutes from the house or strike out on the unmarked trails behind the hale Wehe.

You will see the ocean, Punchbowl volcano crater, Pahoa Valley, the sunset and city of Honolulu from the front and the rainforest and sunrise from the back. Pacific Heights is ten minutes from the University of Manoa, five minutes from downtown and Chinatown, ten minutes from the beach. Most importantly Hale Wehe is not in Waikiki. Just off the Pali, its a straight twenty minute shot to Kailua beaches, Lanikai is arguably the best swimming beach. Or head up to the North Shore for the biggest waves.

Each space has a zen, contemporary, open feeling, with Brazilian mixed hardwood floors and sliding doors offering flexible living, separate rooms or an open space. Most walls are glass. Lofts have bedrooms, study rooms, European all in one shower bath rooms, kitchens that fold away, living room and a shared lanai or deck under a mango tree. The house is a little larger and more open with a separate bedroom, bigger shower room, island kitchen in the living room and two private decks under the trees. All spaces open entirely front to back to catch the breeze making for natural air conditioning.

Guests include visiting professors, faculty on sabbatical, academic conference participants, people new to the island, guest artists and theorists, graduate students, artists, writers and academics in residence, and those looking for a place to replenish.

The house and much of the furniture is hand built under the influence of the russian architect Vladimir Ossipoff transplanted first to Japan and then Hawaii and northern european minimalist design. Recycled materials, including much of the glass were used as much as possible and came mainly from ReUse Hawaii. The hardwood floors are remnants, a mix of teak and other woods.

Water is filtered at the entrance of the property. Only all natural products are used and provided. Mattresses are bamboo memory foam, sheets and towels are all cotton. Optional professional housekeeping $150. Street parking available. The bus is one minute away. 24 hours groceries and pharmacy are ten minutes away. Surf boards, washer/dryer, printers are there to share.
