Period Cottage In Idyllic Country Setting Minutes From Ocean: Private, Pristinely Presented and Pet-Friendly.

Chaffee Cottage, circa 2007, was designed from an 18th-century cape and has all the modern-day amenities, such as central air, washer/dryer, dishwasher, outdoor shower, high-speed wireless internet and cable HDTV.

Located in the historic hamlet of Little Compton, the cottage is less than a mile from the Atlantic ocean as the bird flies, and just a two-mile drive along winding country roads and beautiful pastoral settings to the nearest beach. There are several more beaches within a fifteen-minute driving distance of the cottage, including (but not limited to) Horseneck, Goosewing, South Shore and Elephant Rock beaches. You'll find beautiful country roads, pristine beaches, rolling pastures, antique shops, wineries and nature preserves - all within biking or driving distance.

The cottage has been made available for longer-term rental (a minimum of one calendar month's stay or 31 consecutive days) from October through May at a monthly rate. We will also entertain shorter-term rental periods (a minimum of one week or 7 nights stay) during the peak-season summer months (from June through September) at a weekly rate.

We are pet friendly at Chaffee Cottage. We do, however, reserve the right to consider each pet request on an individual basis. Pets should never be left unattended. A pet-sitting service is available if needed.

This party posted the following feedback for me:
'The Chaffee cottage is pristine, both the house and the grounds. The décor is charming and the furnishings comfortable. This couple keep the house immaculate for their guests. Our daughter and her twins have vacationed there and thoroughly enjoyed their two week stay. It is located in a hamlet of historic homes and is two miles from an Atlantic Ocean beach. I highly recommend this property for vacation or a longer term stay. '

About Me
I was born in Massachusetts and was educated in both the U.S. and in Europe. My wife, Josje, and I have lived in the Netherlands for over thirty years. (Josje's Dutch, so yes; I've learned to speak the language rather fluently, as she has English.) Coming from the United States and The Netherlands respectively, our unanimous favorite country (as well as travel destination) is Ireland. Go figure. Josje often describes Little Compton, RI as "Ireland, with trees;" which I suppose is the highest tribute one could pay to its (Little Compton's) landscape and beauty. And this coming from a woman whose ancestral feet have always been planted steadfastly in the Dutch clay. To this day, her first pair of clogs hang in the cottage, patiently awaiting her arrival like a scuffed and painted swing might an eager child's return. I like to think of myself as an outrageously eclectic and multifarious person, but really I'm just a predictable, overgrown kid at heart. To illustrate this point, Josje says that I have two constants in my life, and that if she woke me up in the middle of the night and asked me if I'd like either one of them, I'd say yes, every time, without fail or hesitation. The first is whether or not I'd like to write; the second is whether or not I'd like an ice-cream. (Take my word for it; my answers remain invariably the same.) One of our favorite hobbies is, of course, getting away - be it for the day or the weekend or a week or a month. We've traveled extensively throughout Europe and the U.S., so we know the importance of a 'clean, well-lighted place' (credit Hemingway for the term); but we choose, as well, whenever and however possible, to stay in rental properties rather than hotels. Our reason is simple, really: hotels can light their windows, but a good home-sill can somehow light the soul. As far as cleanliness is concerned, the Dutch are pretty serious, if not marginally fanatical, about keeping their homes and gardens pristine; and our cottage in Little Compton, RI is certainly no exception! It will be immaculate and orderly and inviting upon your arrival. It will fit you like a familiar sill. Although Josje might not always agree with me on this, I really do think that I'm a pretty approachable and accommodating person. I like people (almost as much as I do ice-cream), and I suppose that shows in my philosophy to life, my approach to business, and dealings my with guests. Add to this the fact that Josje is the kindest, most caring person I know, and one begins to formulate an impression as to why so many of our guests have returned to us unfailingly over the years. We've been renting our cottage over ten years now (the cottage being built by us in 2006), and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience so far. We love our little home-away-from home, and hold it dear to our hearts. When we look out the windows, we see pieces of ourselves. We think you will, too! For me, I know of no other place I'd rather be than in our cottage in Little Compton. That's a tall tribute coming from a displaced Bostonian with ancestral roots spanning from Ireland to Scandinavia (and more than likely a few less-mentionable places in between). To this day, I collect beach rocks and shells and place them around the property (much to Josje's ever-increasing chagrin) like personal remembrances, like shore-prints waiting for me to step into again before the currents of life flow and claim them back. What makes the cottage most unique, then, are those clean, well-lighted artifacts, those little pieces of us left behind to be discovered; because good sills can illuminate the soul in any one of us. We invite you to come and stay with us, to experience it for yourselves. And maybe, if you feel so bold, to gather some beach-stones and shells of your own and place them on the steps and sill, while Josje's not around. You're more than welcome!
