Historic 300-year-old House in Leafy Square, Central London

This landmarked, 3-4 bedroomed, Georgian townhouse, described as a 'home away from home' by one of our recent guests, is situated on a leafy square in the centre of London. This family friendly, safe and historic square is at the heart of Dickensian London, with cobbled streets and the historic St. James’s Church. The house overlooks a park at the back and, within a short walk, you have everything you could possibly need, including boutiques, cafes, restaurants, museums, pubs, two supermarkets (Waitrose and Tesco) and delis. The river (Southbank/Shakespeare's Globe Theatre/National Theatre) and St Paul’s Cathedral is also easily reached within a 15-minute walk. For culture, you can explore the nearby Barbican Centre (cinemas and theatres), or visit Sadlers Wells for ballet/music events. If you have time to study (!), the historic Marx Memorial Library is across the other side of the square and you are close to University College London, LSE, the Old Bailey, the British Library, Birbeck, City University London and Kings College.

On the site of an 11th Century convent, our home has two reception rooms: The bright conservatory room, which can be used as a dining room/lounge or office, features a glass roof, wooden floor, comfortable sofas and a large flat-screen TV. The second reception room is a cosy breakfast room/lounge with a feature fireplace and a second TV.

The fully fitted kitchen has a four-ring gas hob/oven, large fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and coffee maker. It is situated at the front of the house, is brightly decorated and has an original Georgian feature oven.

Three bright large bedrooms are spaced over two floors and they are all decorated in a similar style with period features, lightly painted walls and pine furniture. The main bedroom, is ideal for a couple, with a King-size bed, feature fireplace and double sash windows overlooking the square. The two top floor bedrooms have double beds so are ideal for couples or individuals (e.g. children/visitors). One of the top floor bedrooms has a double aspect, overlooking both the square and the Church park, which is at the back of the house. The peaceful Church park is open to the public and ideal for relaxing and enjoying a picnic. There is also a small children's playground. For larger families, there is also the possibility of a fourth bedroom, available by negotiation.

The large double bathroom has two sinks, a shower and a bath. Downstairs, there is also a powder room/laundry room (with washing machine/sink and toilet). There is Wifi, stereo and a Bang & Olufsen flat screen TV ready for streaming. This house is pet-free and non-smoking and is ideally suited to a couple or a small family. We provide all utensils to make your stay as comfortable as possible, including, cutlery/kitchen pots and pans, iron/ironing board, linen and towels, and we have gas central heating.

The closest tube/mainline station is Farringdon, just 5 minutes on foot, with links into London, Brighton, and the main UK airports. We are also very close to two main bus routes – one into the central shopping and theatre area (12 minutes to Oxford Circus, Covent Garden, Shaftesbury Avenue) and another which goes to the mainline train station of Kings Cross St Pancras (home of Eurostar to Europe) in one direction and to the river in the other (10 minutes). Despite such a central location, the square only has occasional light traffic.

We have been renting highly successfully for over two years through Sabbatical Homes. Here are some of the comments from our guests (all University professors/other professionals):

We are ideally looking for a longer term renter for this special home – 2+ months, but minimum rental of 7 nights is also possible if the house is vacant. The cost excludes bills (utilities, council tax, Wifi, TV licence - approximately £400-£600 a month depending on time of year/number of occupants). A cleaning service is provided. About Me
I am a professional photographer with over 40 years’ experience in TV, fashion, and corporate photography. I have lived in my central London home for 17 years and I have taken great care to refurbish it to a very high standard. I am passionate about this special character house in a unique area, and now wish to let it for restricted periods to academics and other professionals. During these periods, I will be spending my time at my family home in the South of England in Kemsing, Kent (one hour’s drive away). I also have experience of property management and I have rented the house for short periods to professionals in the past. I have a girlfriend, Elaine, who is a Director of Fundraising with a children’s charity. Elaine’s brother is a University professor.

Our family (two parents, two children, aged 7 and 5) stayed at this amazing home for five months, from January to the end of May. We were working near the British Museum, and the flat was convenient for everything. We walked to many places. For longer distances, Farringdon Tube station is a short walk away, and the bus also stops very nearby. We could be anywhere in the city in less than a half an hour. The place is nicely furnished, spacious for central London, and very comfortable. The beds were well appointed (and plentiful) with very nice linens. There is natural light in all the rooms. There were nearby parks and playgrounds that our children frequented. Our hosts were immaculate, and always answered us promptly. They provided a thorough list of nearby attractions, and were very helpful and courteous, also providing suggestions for when we traveled outside of London. Dining options nearby are fantastic – we had Sunday roast at the Crown Tavern next door (nearly weekly, it seemed), or at any number of other top-notch pubs and eateries in the area. Close by is Exmouth Market, a very trendy street, with excellent dining options including Moro! Eating in was also easy, with a Waitrose and a Tesco down the street. Clerkenwell is bustling and hip during the day, but clears out in the evening and on weekends, making it an ideal location. We found this house in Clerkenwell to be a wonderful spot. It is centrally located -- very walkable and easy to get to everything in zone 1. The house itself is great: very spacious for central London, well equipped, with nice natural light and an airy feel. We fell in love with the neighborhood -- it's a really fantastic place to be. The hosts were solicitous and thoughtful; they take great care in doing things properly and promptly. Our family so much enjoyed our time there and would certainly return! My husband and I recently stayed in this wonderful, historic, 3 bedroom Clerkenwell cottage. It served our needs very well, being centrally located to the London School of Economics for my husband, and for me attending a conference at the London Metropolitan University in the other direction. We were surrounded by top class pubs and eateries, the underground and national rail through the Farringdon Station was very handy, the bus stop even handier and a Barclay's bike stand right beside us. The house was very well equipped, comfortable and atmospheric and we thoroughly enjoyed staying there. Our host went the extra mile in providing relevant, up to date information, checking in with us that everything was in order, and when I accidentally locked myself out with keys inside, promptly arranged for a further set to be delivered to me at my conference, outstanding assistance for which I was extremely grateful.
