Jacques LÉVESQUE

Professor Jacques Lévesque has recieved a Ph.D. from the Fondation Nationale des Sciences Politiques and the Sorbonne, University of Paris 1968. He was the founding Director of the Department of Political Science of the Université du Québec à Montréal in 1969, and served on its Administrative Board and its Executive Committee. As a specialist of Soviet and East European Affairs he held numerous research and teaching positions in foreign institutions. He was Senior Fellow of the Research Institute on Communist Affairs of Columbia University, New York 1969, Research Fellow of the Russian Research Center, Harvard University (1972-73), Directeur d'Etudes Associé à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales de Paris (1977-78). For two years, (1985-87) he taught in the Department of Political Science of the University of California, Berkeley, and was a Research Associate of the Berkeley-Stanford Program on Soviet International Behavior.
Dr Lévesque has published numerous articles in international scholarly journals and nine books, some of which have been translated to English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese Polish and Hungarian. In 1985, 1987 and 1989 he was invited to expert-briefings for the Secretary of State for External Affairs of Canada, the R.H. Joe Clark on the eve of his visits to the USSR and Eastern Europe. On many occasions, he presented expert testimony before the parliamentary Committee on External Affairs and its sub-committees. He was a Special Adviser at the Canadian Permanent Mission at the United Nations, in the Fall of 1984 and June 1988. He has done numerous field research trips to the Russia, Eastern Europe and China. He has lived in Moscow for 8 months in 1975 as a Research Associate at the Institute of the USA and Canada of Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is a Killam Fellow (1992-1994). From 1993 to 1996, he was Vice-President of the Royal Society of Canada and President of l'Académie des Lettres et Sciences Humaines of the Royal Society, to which he was elected in 1982. He is “Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Québec” and member of the Order of Canada. In June 2000, he was awarded the title of “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur” by the President of France, Jacques Chirac.
