I spent 5 weeks (March/April) in the flat and enjoyed each single day with pleasure.

In the first place was the communication with Eleni Varikas via mail kind, prompt and uncomplicated. In the house in Athens a caretaker hands over keys and informations (and support, if necessary).

I found the bedroom very comfortable (5th floor), good mattress and soft light cover, with a nice green balcony with Bougainvillea in bloom, to sit and catch the morning sun and watch all of the neighbourhood walk their dogs in the little playground below and have their morning chats. Ample bathroom and entrance hall. Spiral staircase inside the apartment between 5th and 6 th floor (but also the elevator, using the entrance doors on both floors). Upstairs is a small kitchen with a stove and oven - too small to do everyday complete cooking but for me perfect for breakfast and an easy and delicious meal in the evening with some Greek bakery food and a freshly cut salad (bakery and greengrocer just across the street, open late and even on Sunday). The room on 6th floor is spacious with comfortable couches and large sliding windows in the east and west to the roof terrace. The view is breathtaking - Piraeus, the islands Salamis and Aigina in the west (sunsets!) and the ships' traffic in the blue saronic gulf. One can watch weather! I watched a thunderstorm and a duststorm, and the sea from very calm to quite swell. It's wonderful to sit at your working table with a really far view over the Greek see of islands.

No washing machine, but support by the lady who takes care of linen and towels, who is helpful if assistance is needed (and there's a laundry next to baker and greengrocer).

The neighbourhood in the comune Nea Smyrni is safe, calm (except of a few not perfectly adapted dogs in the neighbourhood) and green - all streets lined with trees, particularly orange trees, their scent wafting lovely everywhere. The connection with public transport is perfect - just crossing the playground in front of the house to reach the tram station, going in 15-20 minutes by tram and metro to the center of Athens (and from there further connections) and to the nearest point of the coast in 10 minutes.

This time of the year the apartment was my ideal place to work all day at home as well as to go out all day and come back smashed in the evening to relax and marvel at a red sunset behind Piraeus. Hoping to be back another spring or autumn.

Eleni was prompt in correspondence, reasonable and pleasant, and her apartment was fabulous. My son and I had two weeks that I will forever treasure. Internet was fast and reliable, and I was able to write very productively. Tram line to centre of town (in one direction) or to the beach (in the other direction) is right outside.
