Need a break from academia? Escape to Nature!

Writing a book or working on a new project?
Come to Engiadina to enhance your creative powers! Tease out your best ideas on long walks or while soaking in hot mineral baths. Inspiration floats through the pristine air of the Dolomite mountains and flows freely from 20 mineral springs — two of which spout naturally sparkling water!

The historical Engiadiner villages and the rich Romansh culture and language have long stimulated scholars, writers, and artists. Follow in the footsteps of French novelist Marcel Proust, Scottish poet Robert Louis Stevenson, American writer James Fenimore Cooper, British novelist Arthur Conan Doyle, German novelists Thomas Mann and Herman Hesse, and philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche.

Our cosy apartment (65m2) overlooks the Swiss National Park and has all you need to be comfortable and stay motivated. This Engiadiner house was built in 1660 in Scuol (alt. 1290 m [4,232 ft]), a small ancient spa town nestled on banks of the River Inn among 3000-metre summits at the Austrian and Italian borders in the Lower Engiadina Region of the Swiss canton known as the Grisons.

The town has a surprisingly well-developed infrastructure that boasts beautiful public baths and saunas, shops of all sorts, several restaurants and four-star hotels, sports facilities, great ski slopes, a workspace centre, efficient public transport, and even a modern well-equipped hospital and cure centre. Although most of the visitors to Lower Engiadina are German-speakers, you’ll always find friendly help in English. The locals are all poly-lingual, but their everyday transactions take place in Vallader, a dialect of Romansh, Switzerland’s fourth national language.

Need a day off? Take a guided hike or a mountain bike tour, observe wildlife in the Park, play a round of golf, visit the modern art Museum in Susch, check out the famous town of St Moritz, or tour the 11th century Tarasp Castle — a unique backdrop for the work of Not Vital, a local modern sculptor of international renown. The climate here is sunny and moderate; daily mean temperatures in May and June are around 12°C (53°F).

Scuol is easily accessible on public transport from Zurich airport (2.5 hours by train or car). All 12 Swiss universities have excellent academic libraries; the closest are in Zurich (2.5 h), St Gallen (3 h), and Bern (3.5 h).

About Me
I am a psychotherapist, author and independent researcher in the field of emerging secular ritual. My first collection of academic articles, Emerging Ritual in Secular Societies (2017) is the first book of its kind to discuss the importance of secular rituals for cultural and personal growth. The second, Ritual in Fearful Times (2020) is currently in print. In addition, I have written articles art expositions, catalogues and theological journals as well as five practical guides for crafting non-religious ritual, two in French and three in English.
