Private enclave in the city, gourmet's kitchen/cinemaphile's theater

Gather around the Aga in the expansive kitchen or wander down the street to Candy Cane Lane or to an award-winning restaurant. This is the ideal base for enjoying Seattle at any time of year. The core of the house dates to 1922 and many of the original features remain, but it has been added onto in multiple directions over 4 floors.

On the main floor is a huge kitchen with coveted Aga 4-oven range, huge granite-topped island, eating area, lounging area, skylights, and floor-to-ceiling south-facing windows. Adjacent is a mudroom with bar sink and a half bath. On the other side is a small reading room and a large tile-floored sunroom/conservatory facing to the east and south. We have used the massive dining room to seat up 20 guests, but the table currently in place seats 6-12 (depending on leafs). Beyond the formal entryway, a large living room with art deco fixtures and furniture completes the first floor.

On the second floor are 2 bedroom suites. The immense master has private bathroom with spa tub and dual shower heads. The other bedroom is actually a 2-room suites and shares another full bath. The third floor (my favorite) has just two small rooms and can be used as another bedroom or as a den with 4k flatscreen TV and views of the Cascade Range and Lake Washington (as well as much of Laurelhurst).

The lower floor has a guest bedroom with separate ground-level entrance and a movie theater (110 inch screen, velvet curtains, HD projector, blu-ray player, sound system). When not in use, the theater can be used as an extra bedroom with queen mattress and queen pullout sofa. A laundry room with utility sink and a 3/4 bath complete the lower floor.

The house is in the city, but feels very private due to the huge ( 10000 sf) lot and lush grounds (azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwoods, maples, grape arbor, blueberries, salal, oregon grape, laurel, etc.). Outdoors there is a patio off the kitchen and a secluded lawn by the front door. The house is set well back from and above the winding Olmstead-designed Ravenna Blvd, so easiest access (and parking) is via secret alley-way on the south side. From there it is a flat and scenic 0.6 mile walk or bike ride to the University of Washington's main campus. It is half that distance west to "the Ave" (University Way) featuring innumerable restaurants, pubs, and shops plus a weekly year-round farmers' market (rated by USA Today as one of the 10 best in the country).

A neighborhood coffee roaster/market/pub is half a block away. It sometimes features music and is always a great place to hang out and meet the neighbors. Also just a couple of blocks away is Ravenna Park, ideal for a scenic jog descending down to Ravenna Creek where it is hard to believe one is in the midst of a major city. Just on the other side of the park (via pedestrian bridge crossing high above the creek) is another restaurant-row, this one featuring 3 restaurants by a James Beard Award-winning chef plus what many consider to be Seattle's best sushi. Complementing the small shops on the Ave, a 15 minute walk to the southeast takes one to the upscale University Village shopping center with its own set of restaurants. On the way you cross the Burke-Gilman bike trail which follows old rail corridor, 17 miles one way to the Woodinville Wine Country, 9 miles the other to Golden Gardens Park/Beach on Puget Sound, with many breweries and other sites of interest along the way in either direction (bikes available to borrow).
