Grand old house in Woodstock

Charming, spacious, old-fashioned, private, but minutes from the Village Green. Home to artists, writers and musicians for more than a hundred years.

At the core of this 1920’s colonial is an 1836 farmhouse with hand-hewn beams and pegged oak floors. The house has the last steam radiators in town and 1930’s-era bathrooms. The square farmhouse kitchen is fully equipped and the adjoining dining room seats six in front of a picture window. The living room has a large couch and chaise, a fireplace, a piano and a formal dining table in front of a bay window. Also downstairs is a king size bedroom with its own fireplace and shower room. Upstairs is a second large bedroom with two twin beds, a fireplace and a bathtub beside a row of windows overlooking the stream. The third large bedroom has a queen size bed, an overstuffed arm chair for reading, and its own hall bath. All three bedrooms have bookshelves and study desks. The wireless high-speed routers can be moved to wherever you work most often. There is also a nursery with a baby’s crib that can be moved to the other bedrooms. The living room has a queen-sized sleeper couch, and there is a full-sized futon couch on the screened porch for summer nights.

Two smart TVs connect to the internet for streaming or mirroring your phone or laptop. There is a turntable and collection of LPs in the kitchen along with several vintage radios, CD players and cassette players. Cable TV can be provided on request.

Outside is a stream, a golf course, a country road, and the main road into town. Mountains and lakes are a short drive away.

Woodstock is a lively arts colony with lots of friendly, progressive people, organic markets, restaurants, cafes, a wonderful library and bookstore, and an array of spiritual centers and retreats.

The owner will arrange to clean the house during your stay. There is a final cleaning fee. No smoking anywhere inside.

Length of stay is negotiable. Contact me for more information and pictures.

About Me
World-traveler and homebody; I've lived in many beautiful places--Alaska, California, most recently Oxford, UK. But I love the mountains and streams of my home town the best. I grew up in Woodstock, New York, where the bumper stickers have obscure Buddhist jokes: "my other vehicle is the Mahayana." I studied Religion at Barnard College, and Comparative Literature at Princeton. My first academic appointment was in Fairbanks, Alaska, and my second at Harvard. I then went to law school and spent the next decade working on civil rights and civil liberties issues in D.C. I have been a member of Sabbatical Homes since 2016 when I listed my "Treehouse in DC" and had two wonderful tenants there.

I stayed here for 9 months, and it was a great place to stay. It is a very bright and airy apartment in a quiet, secure building whose common areas have recently been updated too. It is near grocery stores and public transit options, so the location is very convenient. Kate responded to my calls/texts/e-mails very quickly. Excellent James 4/17/2018 10:58:00 AM
