The Ceramic House, award winning artist's home

Stunning artist’s house, award winning, and featured in many magazines, The Ceramic House is a work of art in itself.

There are 4 rooms available.
Loft Room en suite
Gallery Room en suite
Deco Room shares a bathroom with
Blues Room

The rooms are comfortably furnished with a mix of handmade/built in and antique furniture. The loft has a king size bed. All other rooms have double beds. All come supplied with linens and towels. The loft and gallery have TV/DVD players and en suite bathrooms. The Gallery is situated in a separate building from the house, with its own street entrance, private terrace and mini kitchenette and access to the main house (kitchen etc.) is just across the garden. The whole house is furnished with retro/deco/antiques along with many pieces I have collected on my travels. I also collect art and I have an extensive collection of ceramics and original prints and paintings. WIFI with several boosters throughout the house.

Lovely garden on four different levels with two terraces completely enclosed with mature climbers and flowers. It is a very private, lovely space full of artwork – most of the walls and surfaces are tiled with hand-made tiles, it has been described as a Gaudiesque wonderland!

The house has everything you need including wireless internet. Breakfast is not included but there are several good cafes for breakfast within 5 minutes walk. Tea/coffee making facilities available in the room. Laundry facilities available for stays of a week or more. Kitchen facilities available for you to do your own cooking for stays of a week or more.

We are just round the corner from Fiveways, where there is a shop to suit every requirement, several cafes/delicatessens and there are some great pubs too not far away.

Free parking on the street. From my street, the 50U bus goes to the Sussex/Brighton University campuses in Falmer and the 50 goes into the centre of Brighton (10 minutes). More buses stop at Fiveways. Walking into the city centre takes 20 minutes or it’s just a 10 minute cycle ride. The train to Falmer Campus takes 2 minutes from Moulsecombe or 5 minutes from London Road. Both stations are 15 minutes walk from the house. Brighton University’s other sites all easily accessible from my house varying between 15 and 30 minutes walk depending on which site. Buses to all sites from Stanmer Villas/Fiveways.

At the end of my road is Hollingbury Woods and the Golf Course, which is where the South Downs begins...only 5 minutes to views across the south coast and nature. The South Downs is Britain’s youngest national park and the South Downs Way is a long distance walk and one of Britain’s national trails, running for 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne. It is very popular with walkers, and can be travelled on bicycle or horseback.

Brighton has many attractions, including The Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier, the beach. Brighton is great for cycling around, or just walking, taking in the Lanes, traditional pubs and great restaurants.

There are so many festivals, there seems to be something happening every weekend, including all kinds of music, comedy, food, film festivals. Brighton is an end-destination for many races and vehicular rallies. There is also the London to Brighton bike ride every year not to mention the naked bike ride!

I can give you all the information you need if you are an art lover. The Brighton festival every May is a must-go-to experience. The Brighton Photo Bienniale is the biggest photography festival in Europe.

Brighton is a great place to explore the south coast and London. There are several great art galleries along the coast, including Hastings Contemporary, the Towner at Eastbourne and the Turner Contemporary at Margate.

Gatwick airport is 30 minutes on the train from Brighton.

About Me
I'm Kay, I am an artist and I have created The Ceramic House since I moved to Brighton in 2008. I graduated in 1995 from Chelsea College of Art, specialising in ceramics and glass. I create site-specific commissions for the public realm and large-scale tiled installations for gallery spaces. Exhibitions include Kogei Triennial Kanazawa, Japan, European Ceramic Context, Denmark, Elit-Tile Triennial, Dominican Republic, Seoul Art Space Mullae, Korea and British Ceramics Biennial. I live with my partner Joseph who is also an artist and works in sound. We both travel a lot for our work, both individually and co-curating ambitious projects in ceramics and sound. Joseph is currently studying a PhD at UCD, Dublin. I am originally from Scotland and Joseph is from Brighton. There is a very relaxed, friendly vibe here. I love having people to stay and you will feel most welcome and comfortable here. I am easy going, enjoy cooking, the occasional fabulous party, and enjoying life. I have travelled extensively and can speak various languages. My travelling style is spontaneous and independent. The Ceramic House is an award-winning project that I started in 2011. It is a pop-up gallery space, our home and a living showcase of my architectural ceramics practice. I curate exhibitions of contemporary ceramics here usually in May as part of the Brighton Festival. Since 2016, The Ceramic House focus has been research into collaborative ceramic and sound art practice with an ongoing international residency programme as part of larger projects. Additionally, we offer rooms to short term guests throughout the year.
