I am in my mid-70s. I am a consultant, working for dictionary.com as the staff etymologist (I also write the short essays for Word of the Day). I have a Ph.D. in classics (U. of Pennsylvania, 1978) and have taught high school Latin and history. When I was in the U.S. Army (1966-70), I was a Russian, Polish, and German translator. For pleasure, I read James Joyce, Joseph Mitchell and Homer, Thucydides, Plato, and Cicero. I also read thrillers the way people eat potato chips.
