Jingletown Live/Work Loft

My home is a live/work townhouse with a 1 bedroom apartment on the 2nd floor and a finished double studio & bath with a separate entrance on the ground floor. The apartment is the unit for rent; it has an open floor plan with a kitchen, living/dining area, and a separate bedroom and bath. There are high ceilings with lots of natural light from skylights and large windows. Minimum stay for rental is 30 days.
For a home exchange, both floors of the work/live condo are available. In addition to the apartment on the first floor, the double finished studio on the ground floor has a full bath; there is a twin futon in the first studio and a queen size futon in the 2nd studio. The ground floor studio is 650 square feet and has french doors that open onto the garden patio. For the home exchange with both floors, you can easily sleep 5-6 people. Minimum stay for home exchange is 15 days.
There are 6 townhouses in the condominium building, all facing an interior garden. The apartment has access to a shared garden at the center of the courtyard. The complex is quiet and sheltered from the street with a security gate.
Jingletown, known as an artist district, is a neighborhood located on the Oakland Estuary between the Park St and the Fruitvale bridges. The Estuary separates Oakland from the island of Alameda, California. There are murals throughout the neighborhood; housing is a mix of factory buildings converted into artists'lofts, single family homes, and new live/work condominiums.
It is a 10 minute walk to the Fruitvale BART station; a 20 minute BART ride to San Francisco or downtown Berkeley. The Fruitvale BART Station is part of the BART Bikehub and has bike vale parking/repairs, 24 hour controlled access parking and free smart bike racks: https://bikehub.com/bart
The Jingletown waterfront is part of the San Francisco Bay Trail; easy bike access to Alameda, Oakland, and San Leandro. It is a 10 minute walk to Alameda, an island city with beaches, bike paths, restaurants, shopping, and a ferry to San Francisco. The Fruitvale district of Oakland is home to many Latino businesses and hosts several annual cultural events, including a Cinco de Mayo parade and a Día De Los Muertos festival.

About Me
I am full time faculty at Merritt Community College in Oakland, CA; the demographics of the students and faculty reflect the diverse community of our city and region. I currently chair the Human Development Department and run the Child Development Program within that department. My travel experiences include Central and South America, Mexico, Italy, Turkey, Greece, and the UK. I am interested in home exchanges in Oxford, UK because my daughter and her family live there. However, I love travel, so am open to home exchanges in other destinations.

I stayed in Christine’s 2nd floor apartment for half almost half a year and thoroughly recommend it to anyone seeking a reasonably priced place to live while commuting to Berkeley/Oakland. The apartment itself is a cozy 1 bedroom with an open and spacious living/dining/kitchen area – its quite ideal for two people to live here. Christine has provided a very well stocked kitchen with all the equipment you’ll likely need. Washer and dryer are downstairs in the 1st floor unit and you can discuss with Christine when are the best times to use them. The apartment has its own relaxed charm that you will very much appreciate after a day’s work.

A bit about the community: the apartment is in a 6-townhouse community that has its own locked gate. You are very safe in this tight-knit community, which is a peaceful and green retreat from everyday life. The neighbors are all very kind and hospitable. This means that you never have to worry about strangers around your apartment.

More about the neighborhood: Jingletown is a charming little neighborhood with art studios and a very nice waterfront that you will want to take walks on at any time of day. You’ll often see UC Berkeley’s crew team or the local dragonboat club practicing on the waterfront. Large grocery stores are a 10 minute walk away. I would describe it as a hidden secret — even visiting locals have commented they are surprised to find this little haven. Despite the reputation of Oakland, I would say the neighborhood has always felt safe. The Fruitvale BART station is what we used for our daily commute and is a short 8 minute walk away. One thing no one prepared us for was the lively nature of the Fruitvale area around the BART — it has a vibrant, friendly, and traditional Hispanic culture that hosts large festivities on occasions like Dia de los Muertos. This also means great Mexican eats! And the station itself hosts a small weekly market. There is also a public library and coffee shops nearby. Public buses from/near the BART can also take you to Alameda for shopping and eats, or into Oakland for a more downtown experience.

Regarding security, exercise the same caution you would in Berkeley/Oakland, like not walking to/from the BART very late at night. It would be ideal l to have a bicycle to get around — you will feel safe zipping around on the road and everything will be within a few mins reach to you (you can even safely park at the BART).

Last, but most important, you will be very lucky to have Christine as your landlady. She is incredibly kind and understanding, as are her friends whom you might come in contact with should you need assistance. I’m glad we got to experience life in Jingletown!
