Ciel Bleu - southern France
Our light-filled south-facing apartment overlooks a historic square and is around the corner from the house where Picasso and Braque rented space in 1911 to work on their Cubist paintings. It’s located on the third floor of a small building and accessible by elevator, especially helpful for transporting suitcases, bags of groceries, and people. The floor-to-ceiling windows give us a stunning view of the Pyrenees foothills above our neighbor’s orange tile roofs, with a bright blue sky capping the scene.
Renters often comment that our apartment is quiet but centrally-located. Our local family-run artisan bakery is just around a different corner and down a cobble-stoned street. Further down that same street is another square with a lovely fountain and restaurants on three sides, a perfect setting for dining al fresco. And Ceret’s famous Musée d’Art Moderne, in the heart of Old Ceret, is less than five minutes’ walk away.
We ourselves spend several months each year in our beloved ‘Ciel Bleu,’ the name we have given our apartment. On the walls we have hung prints of famous works from the museum, and we have placed colourful pottery on the step-out balconies outside each window as well as on our patio.
One of our favourite things to do when we are there is to wake up in the morning and gaze from our pillows out at the gorgeous scene visible from our bedroom window. We often take our morning coffee out to our bistro table on our patio so we can continue to enjoy the view. The square below us, which contains a sculpture by Manolo, is quiet except for Saturday mornings when the weekly market comes to life. Then, we enjoy looking down on the bustling scene of shoppers browsing stalls of bountiful local fresh produce as well as artisan crafts. On Saturdays, after we finish our coffee, we take the elevator downstairs with our shopping basket and join in the fun.
