This is a citation from John M. , a friend who travels the world: You all have a favorite country and or city among many that you love. There is a special feeling of comfort, belonging and even love when you return there. While I feel especially at home in Mexico among many places, Spain is my favorite country. Somehow I relate to the people here more than anywhere. If I could have spent my entire life in just one place, it would have been in this beautiful land. I knew that at age 20 and I still do. There are many cities in Spain and the world that I love for their beauty, culture, etc. My favorite one is by no means the cultural capital. Its setting by the sea is very attractive, but many Spanish cities are beautiful.. The climate is outstanding. Today I climbed up to the castle high above the city and the Mediterranean. I wandered down the slope into favorite neighborhoods where few tourists go filled with smiling people in the pedestrian streets and parks. My favorite city in Spain is Alicante. You may be living in your favorite place all or part of the year as well. Count yourself lucky. Some day I hope you'll discover Alicante off season. You won't regret having done so. (end of citation). On the top of a little hill just above a 7 km soft sandy beach (one of Spains best blue flag beaches) at the end of a peninsula located is our townhouse. From each room we can see the sea and can watch the sunrise or (more often) the sunset from one of our 3 terraces. Alicante is not far, just 5 km to the west and it could be reached walking along a spectacular cliff walk, or by an excellent tram and bus service. Our suburb is called Cabo de Las Huertas and it is the most affluent area around Alicante with Villas for the very rich, but luckily also affordable houses like ours in cosy urbanizations, protected from the public and generally very well maintained by gardeners. The climate here is a microclimate with very little rain due to the surrounding mountains, and more than 300 days of sunshine. Nevertheless in our little garden we have banana trees , lime and lemon trees and the beautiful bougainville flowers. Alicante is not just the City of Light but also of Bougainville and Jacaranda. Due to its mild climate it is an all year destination for golf and tennis players, beach lovers and swimming is possible 8 to 9 months a year. Also Stand Up Paddling has become very popular since there are few days with strong wind or waves. Fly fishing is possible just behind our house and the license costs around 20 Euros per year, as living costs are generally lower here than in many other parts of the country. That applies in particular to the fantastic range of products that is offered on the daily mercado in central Alicante. There you can buy fish, seafood, local fruits and vegetables, meat and cheese at very low costs but incredible high quality. Alicante is one of the 10 most underrated cities in Europe and the quality of life here is appreciated by its citizens. Alicante offers a University, International, British and European schools, theater, sporting facilities of all sorts, extremely good restaurants and above all, generally friendly welcoming people. The pace is relaxed, there is no hurry and siesta is still ubiquitous. Our urbanization is surrounded by a national park and therefore extremely quiet. All of our friends confirmed that they have never slept better and longer than here. When we bought the house 2 years ago we renovated it from the scratch including a German heating system since we know that the nights in winter can be cold and humid and we do not want to sit in Anoraks inside the house like most of the Spaniards. This has proven to be a good investment and we are envied for the only proper heating in our neighborhood. Our house in Alicante is a place to fall in love with as we did and we have seen a lot and lived in so many different places and countries. It is our dream house where we are planning to retire in a few years, but before that we would like to share it with nice people from around the world.
