Brookfield, Vermont, United States
Cottage On the Hill is a 1910 updated cottage with 2 bedrooms and one bathroom. One bedroom could easily be turned into an office if a guest has need of only one bedroom. (Just let us know prior to your stay - we have furniture available to outfit it) This craftsman cottage was built by a master carpenter who was hired to build the nearby "Silver Towers," a lovely historic building now known as the Vermont Grange Center in Brookfield. Many of the same high end materials were used in the construction of the cottage - 3/4" beadboard, douglas fir door casings, handmade interior doors, and beautiful (refinished) wood flooring throughout. Many of the furnishings are restored antiques. The cottage presents a unique opportunity for those studying botany with it's location next to a rare "fen" ecosystem. A recent easement was purchased by the Nature Conservancy and there is public access to this area. According to a recent article "Brookfield’s fens are located near the top of the ridge line separating the Connecticut and Champlain Valley watersheds where a calcium-rich layer of limestone called the Waitsfield formation runs beneath the peat and hardpan clay above. Visitors to the fen can readily observe the biodiversity granted by these mineral deposits—marsh ferns, three-way sedge, orchids, mint, bunchberry, Joe-Pye-weed, wild strawberry, and even tiny carnivorous plants all thrive here—sometimes within inches of one another." (Kelley, D. (2020, August 13). Brookfield Fens Hold Rare Ecosystem. You also have usage of a pellet stove fireplace in the gorgeous original massive brick fireplace, The stove/oven, refrigerator, dishwasher and clothes dryer and washing machine are all relatively new appliances (within last 4 years). A secondary ADA- rated handrail has been placed the entire length of the staircase in addition to the original handcrafted bannister.
