This home is beautiful in any season, but August is perhaps the best month to visit Pictou and Atlantic Canada. Long sandy beaches for daily swims are just a 7-minute drive away. Walk into town to see the fisheries museum, catch one of the free nightly summer concerts, or to linger at one of the waterfront restaurants. The ferry to Prince Edward Island is just 10 minutes away. Halifax airport is an 1 hour and 20 minutes by car, and Halifax/Dartmouth another 20 minutes from there. There are many sites to visit throughout the province, but once you are here you may just want to unwind in this lovely home. With its sublime view, beautiful light, and generous proportions, this home is a place to release stress and renew focus. Set on a hill at the eastern edge of town, this Four-Square Captain’s house overlooks the tidal waters of Pictou Harbour. Built in the 1890s, it is surrounded by lawn and garden on an acre of land that slopes down through trees towards the salt water shore. Deer frequently step out from the wooded lower section. Eagles soar above along shoreline air currents. Through its many windows daylight bathes this house from dawn to dusk. This is most evident in the spacious south-facing dining room-lounge. Added in recent years, it offers a panoramic view that changes from moment to moment with the day’s shifting light. With ten-foot ceilings, the spaces in this house are generously scaled. The dining room-lounge stretches 23 feet from east to west. On the-west side it opens through double glass doors into the TV screening room. On the east it flows into the spacious kitchen. With its abundant counter and storage space, this well-equipped kitchen is a joy to spend time in. Upstairs, the main bedroom features a large bay window with views down to the harbour, and into town. At night the starry sky can be pondered from a pillow. The other bedroom has windows looking north and east. There are two office-studies to work in. The 1st floor’s grand room has a large wooden table where books and papers can be spread out. This space can easily serve as a drawing studio. The wireless laser printer and router-modem are here. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the house. The writing room on the 2nd floor has a desk by a window that looks out to the harbour. Both rooms are quiet — at a remove from other sounds in the house. Pictou’s colonial beginnings date back to 1773 when Nova Scotia's first Scottish settlers arrived. That it was once a thriving port is evident in the legacy of stone buildings that remain downtown, and the large old homes above the harbour. This captain's house was once occupied by captain Ralph Hemphill, who in the mid-1960s sailed the square rigger ship —of Mutiny on the Bounty fame— on the world tour promoting the film. Pictou County’s history (and captains) can be researched nearby at the McCulloch House: Museum & Genealogy Centre. Now a town of 3,100, today Pictou is a wonderfully friendly community. New Glasgow, Stellarton, and Trenton, are just 16 minutes away by car. Those 3 adjacent towns broaden the range of shopping and entertainment amenities. The ferry to Prince Edward Island is a 10-minute drive. Caribou and Munroe Island Provincial Park, with its 3-kilometer sandy beach is just 7 minutes. Many other nature and cultural sites are accessible within a 2-hour drive or less. Seven universities and colleges lie within 90 minutes of town; the closest being the NSCC Pictou Campus in Stellarton. Dalhousie University’s Agricultural campus in Truro is 45 minutes away. This Captain’s house is a great base to set out from to explore eastern Canada’s natural beauty, maritime culture and friendly hospitality. It is also a welcoming haven to return to. If you are interested in arranging a stay, or wish to know more, don't hesitate to contact us. It will be available for an extended stay from December 15, 2024, and on into April, 2025.
