Provincia di Rieti, Lazio, Italy
Farm style historical home with 3 bedrooms (sleeps 6), set in the beautiful Sabina hills, 56 km north of Rome, it is well connected by train and motorway to Rome main stations and Fiumicino airport. Two large bedrooms, terrace, bathroom and a characteristic library/study room upstairs; large sitting room, one bedroom with en-suite bathroom, storage room, patio with stone table and benches on the ground floor. Orchard, garden, fish pond, swimming pool, outdoor jacuzzi, BBQ facilities, fully equipped and furnished with antiques. In the house, the beamed ceiling together with old furniture and antiques, vintage accessories and equipment, add to the character and fascination of the residence. Originally an 18th century farmhouse, gradually extended over time, meticulous upkeep of this house has retained the vernacular character of the old farmers’ dwelling while offering all modern facilities. On the hilltop, among orchards and olives, with wonderful, peaceful views all around, ten minutes’ drive from the train taking to Rome in 40 minutes. Garden and orchard, swimming pool and spa, plus a fantastic secluded terrace ideal for meditation, reading and sunbathing, guarantee the perfect relaxing holiday. Great country walks all around and treks across the surrounding mountains for the sport inclined, plenty of gorgeous medioeval villages in the neighborhood. Also within short pleasant drives of Umbria and the Franciscan places. The medieval villages of Poggio Catino and Catino, home of Gregorio da Catino, librarian of the nearby, famous Farfa abbey,, are within walking distance, while the beautiful medieval walled town of Casperia is located on a hilltop, 7 km north of the house. Casperia has a lovely Romanesque bell tower at the duomo, and one of the most beautiful “presepe”, a nativity set in the environment of the Casperia town. The tiny village of Cantalupo in Sabina (3 km northwest), home of the “canteloupe” mellons imported here from the first Christian missions in the Americas, displays on its hilltop the deteriorating but extremely rich country residence of Cardinal Cesi, created in the 16th century from an existing fortress, with its impressive perched facade by the Vignola school (currently under extensive maintenance works). Relaxing walks, bicycle and horse riding along the many paths or along the Tiber river, bird watching in the nearby Nazzano-Tevere-Farfa natural reserve, as well as angling on the Farfa river or pike fishing in the Tiber are exciting possibilities to enjoy the beauty of the Sabina hills. Excellent food to be purchased directly from the many small farms around (including nearest neighbor), small, inexpensive but excellent “trattorie”, or just tasting local bread with the famous Sabina cold pressed olive oil and a glass of wine complete your sense of well being. Leisure time can be dedicated to rest, swim, sunbathing, sipping drinks or having dinner in the patio at sunset; or, if you wish to try local recipes, cooking on the charcoals or in the large, old wood oven where bread for the whole neighborhood used to be baked for centuries on Sundays.
Comments: Dates and duration are flexible, but I am not comfortable with very short stays
