Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain
PERFECT LOCATION -Beautiful apartment on a well-lit and probably the most beautiful pedestrian street in Barcelona, just off the Plaza Catalunya, the heart of the city. And if you don't believe me, just have a look at it - Links 1, 2 and 3. The building in the background is a 14th century monastery. The ceramic mural ( 5' x 3') in Link 3 - is just one of nine such on the street below with poetry or historical allusions. (It is also one of the safest streets in BCN, tucked just behind the local police station.) The open plan living area is done in "Modernista" style with a mosaic-type dining table, period mirror, traditional Catalan vaulted ceilings and the origina wooden beams. There are new parquet floors throughout. There are two bedrooms, one double bedroom with a queen-sized bed. The other bedroom has s a single bed and can be used as another office. There is a new shower in the new bathroom. There is brilliant sunlight to wake up to and enjoy all day long. There is, of course, a full kitchen, There is air conditioning and heating in the living area (salon) and in the double bedrooms. Museums and universities are within walking distance. Speaking of restaurants, there are over 30 within a one-minute walk of the apartment (including Els 4 Gats (google it), the then café where Picasso had his first exhibition in 1899. 20 seconds away is the smallest bar in BCN (14 sq. m) where you will meet locals (given the size of the bar you have no choice!). I'll give you a list of the best (and most reasonable) local restaurants where the locals eat, as well as the out of the way small cafes and bars where interesting people (including academics) drop in to have a drink and a chat. The internet connection at the computer desk gives you unlimited telephone calls to Spanish land lines and mobile phones. The bus stop on the Via Laeitana will take you to the beach in air-conditioned comfort in 7 minutes - walk there in 20 minutes. While there is air-conditioning, the apartment is naturally air-cooled and ventilated by leaving the front balcony double doors (floor to ceiling) and rear windows open all day so that a cool breeze comes through the apartment. The narrow street, with 8 dress shops, curio shops, artisans (a puppet-maker, a carpenter and a watch-maker) and restaurants, is actually a stop on the Modernist Route (google it), so there is life on the street till after midnight. (Tourists of the better type, as it were.). You are a 2-minute walk (across the Via Laietana) to the Music Palace (Link 4), one of Europe's treasures and, in my opinion, the best place in Barcelona for a cup of coffee, But the treat of the apartment is that 25 seconds from the hustle and bustle of the Via Laietana you are on a beautiful, very quiet (and well-lit) medieval street straight out of Cervantes and just 20 meters from the monastery of Santa María de Montsío (1371). 30 seconds away is a new park/toddler's playground with a café. A walk through the Gothic Quarter or to El Born from the apartment is a walk back in time. The Plaza Catalunya, the heart of Barcelona, is a 4-minute walk from the apartment. The Passeig de Gracia with its designer shops and Modernist buildings, begins there. You can pass in the Gothic Quarter through Roman Barcelona with its walls, then medieval Barcelona with its narrow streets and 12th century Cathedral (Link 5), then on to the Modernist buildings on the Passeig de Gracia. And you do all this on foot in 20 minutes. At the Plaza Catalunya 2 metro lines, 2 train lines and 20 bus lines (and 7 Nightbus) lines stop there. The famous novel, Shadow of the Wind, takes place in the area - in fact, it opens around the corner. Former guests include New Zealand Government Minister, many academics on sabbatical (some for the 3rd time) Quilts/du and authors. Quilts/duvets, towels and sheets are included. Just bring your clothes, your toothbrush and your laptop!
