Lexington, Massachusetts, United States
Our house is on a "country road" five minutes from great shopping, and 30 minutes from downtown Boston, many universities and colleges, next to 100 acres of woods. A "50's modern" ranch house with large windows, 3 bedrooms, master with queen-sized bed, one with double, one with twin beds, 4th bedroom is an office looking out at back garden, good closets, gorgeous kitchen designed by architect husband with granite countertops, top of line appliances, adjacent to separate dining room, large living room, TV room-library. There is also a Steinway grand piano. Two full bathrooms, laundry room, all on one floor. Full basement, second refrigerator-freezer. Oil forced hot air/airconditioning. Large beautiful gardens backing up to woods with walking paths can be viewed from adjoining decks, perfect for summer cook-outs and informal gathering. Good circulation in house for entertaining. The gardens are maintained, driveway plowed in winter, and a house cleaner every month or more often if needed at additional fee. Our neighborhood is next to Willards Woods with lovely walking paths on a long winding street with all single-family homes. We are close to I-95 (Route 128), the inner ring road around Boston and its suburbs, close to the Burlington Mall. One can easily drive in to Boston or drive to the "T" (Metro) in 15 minutes for public transport. In addition, the seashore and other New England states such as New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island are less than an hour away, and the Berkshire Mountains in the west of Massachusetts are a little more than two hours away. Of course, Boston has many cultural activities, a beautiful riverfront, and a sophisticated city and gastronomical life. Our town is historic in American terms: the first battle of the Revolutionary War in 1775 took place here. Lexington is a town of 26,000 people with a real town center and plenty of shops. There is a big library (bibliotheque) and a museum as well as several interesting historic buildings. For French families with children, there is an excellent Ecole Bilangue in the next town, Arlington. We are a retired couple, Wright and Meme (Mimi in French) (architect and classical singer) who love to travel in Europe and have spent most of the past ten years living in Paris, the first year as an exchange. We have made quite a number of French friends and have joined several activities (choral, bilingual groups, etc.) in order to meet French people as well as some anglophones. For shorter trips we have always rented a small house or apartment in other parts of France, Italy, or Spain.
